GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College field hockey team put a scare into first-place Denison University on Saturday morning, but the Ladies could not finish off the Big Red, who scored a late goal in regulation and one more in overtime to escape McBride Field with a 3-2 win.

Denison (16-1, 12-1 NCAC) started the scoring in the game's 20th minute with a goal from Katie McMahon. She picked up a loose ball during a scrum in front of the Kenyon cage and flicked it by Kenyon goalkeeper Sydney Carney-Knisely.

Kenyon (10-6, 8-4 NCAC) answered seven minutes later. The Ladies were awarded a penalty shot and sophomore Maddie Breschi stepped up and tied the game with a line drive into the right side of the Tigers' cage.

The score remained deadlocked for the next 20 minutes, but Kenyon never let up on the offensive pressure. A little more than 12 minutes into the second half, that pressure paid off. From about 20 yards out, junior Julie Freedman fired a shot that caught Denison keeper Laura Campbell off guard and gave the Ladies a 2-1 advantage.

The upset-minded Ladies maintained that lead for the next 14 minutes, but Denison's Molly Chapman then put a hole in those plans. Off a penalty corner, Chapman scored the equalizer with 8:27 left on the clock.

Chapman factored into the game-winner, too. A little more than four minutes into the first overtime period, she collected the inbound pass off another penalty corner. She then delivered a pass to McMahon, who launched a shot toward the left side of the Kenyon cage, where it deflected off a Kenyon defender and across the goal line.

Overall, Kenyon outshot the Big Red 11-6, including a 9-2 differential in the second half. The Ladies will try to bounce back Sunday with another conference game, this one at Oberlin College beginning at noon.
