GAMBIER, Ohio  – The Kenyon College men's basketball team overcame a nine-point halftime deficit after cooling down a hot offensive attack by the Earlham College Quakers. However, the Lords could not hold on to a five-point advantage down the stretch as they saw it wane away in the final two-plus minutes. The Quakers did just enough to hold off a late charge by the Lords, defeating them on their home court by an 86-84 final score.

Another subpar shooting night from the perimeter and costly turnovers once again did the Lords in and flipped a five-point lead into a two-point loss on Monday night. With 2:32 left to play, Earlham's Kristian Barden cut the lead to three with a layup and following a Jonathan Amador three-point miss, the Quakers took advantage of being in the bonus via a foul by Ikenna Nwadibia. After Kirk Douglas hit two free throws, the lead was cut to one. A turnover by Cooper Handelsman led directly to Vadial Jett going the other way for the go-ahead score heading into the final minute of play with the Quakers leading, 81-80.

Coming off of an offensive rebound, Handelsman turned the ball over once again by way of a steal executed by Chris Holmes. Coming out of another timeout, this time taken by Earlham, the Quakers set up a play that sent Kirk Douglas to the bucket for a reverse layup to extend the lead to three. After Nwadibia put forth another close-range shot and Jett returned with a pair of free throws, the Lords offense set up for a drive to hole, hoping for a foul on the way to the hoop.  Julian Pavlin drove and while he made the layup was not fortunate enough to draw a foul. The Lords were forced to foul the Quakers immediately, sending Douglas to the line for a one-and-one opportunity with one second to go. After hitting his first, he missed the second but corralled his own rebound to seal the win for Earlham.

Earlham (1-4) was near unstoppable in the first half. The Quakers shot at an incredible 75 percent clip from behind the three-point line, led by guard Jack O'Flaherty going 5-for-6 by himself. O'Flaherty shot 7-for-10 from the floor in the first half, leading to 19 points. Michael Parker also had a touch of the hot hand, hitting four of his six three-ball attempts in the opening stanza. Kenyon, on the other hand, was unable to get their deep threat going all game long and relied heavily on its post presence to keep up. Sixteen of their 39 points came inside the painted area, and 20 of their 45 second-half points came from that range, as well.

Behind their near-perfect shooting marks, the Quakers took a 48-39 lead into the half. Kenyon came back to keep the ballgame within reach after Earlham cooled down to a respectable 54.5 percent shooting from the field, but their long game had vanquished after halving their deep shot attempts and only hitting 2-of-8 in the second half. While Kenyon's three-point shooting woes continued, they kept pounding away down low to chip into the deficit. They erased the 10-point lead within the first eight minutes of the second half, though quickly gave it back up and did not regain it until there was 6:19 left on the clock.

Although Kenyon finished shooting 43.7 percent from the field, they only hit 5-of-25 (.200) from behind the arc on the night. Nwadibia was the Lords' leading scorer with 22 points while also chipping in a team-high 13 rebounds. Of his 13 boards, eight were on the offensive side. The Lords actually garnered more offensive rebounds than defensive rebounds (23-17) while out-rebounding the Quakers, 40-26.

Other notable performances came from Pavlin, who scored 15 points and added five assists, two blocks, and two steals. Brian Lebowitz scored 18 points and had six rebounds.

For the Quakers, Michael Parker finished as their high scorer with 22 points. Douglas did it on both ends, finishing with 21 points, four boards, four assists, and four blocks. After scoring 19 points in the first half, O'Flaherty was held to zero points and just one shot attempt in the second.

With the loss, Kenyon falls to 1-4 on the season heading into a three-game stretch against North Coast Athletic Conference opponents. They will return to the hardwood on Dec. 4 at Oberlin College to engage in their second NCAC contest of the year. Their following two games will be back at Tomsich Arena versus Hiram College on Dec. 7 and Allegheny College on Dec. 10.
