GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College Ladies field hockey team finished off the 2013 regular season with a 12-6 overall record, the program's best mark since 2006. The Ladies also finished third in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings with a 10-4 record and captured a spot in the upcoming four-team NCAC Tournament.
Tournament play gets started Wednesday, as the No. 3-seeded Kenyon team travels to Granville, Ohio to take on the No. 2-seeded Denison University Big Red, who were crowned conference co-champions along with DePauw University. Kenyon and Denison will tangle at 3 p.m., while DePauw hosts The College of Wooster in the other semifinal game, which gets underway at 2 p.m.
Denison (17-1, 13-1 NCAC) twice defeated Kenyon during the regular season. The Big Red won at home 3-1 back in September and then, a little more than a week ago, escaped Kenyon with two late goals and a 3-2 overtime victory. Dating back to the 1972 season, the Big Red have built a convincing 60-18-3 all-time series record against the Ladies. Surprisingly, the two teams have never met in the NCAC Tournament.
Kenyon got to this point with a powerful offense that ranks second all-time in program history with 63 goals and an average of 3.50 goals per game. Leading the charge, sophomore
Maddie Breschi has posted Kenyon single-season records of 17 goals and 42 points. Junior
Rachel Hall has amassed 15 goals and 34 points, while
Christine Bloom and
Julie Freedman have contributed six goals apiece.
On the defensive end, senior goalkeeper
Sydney Carney-Knisely has made 70 saves and posted a 1.51 goals against average. Sophomore
Morgen Barroso has a team-high and conference-high four defensive saves.
Denison also unleashes a top-grade offense. The Big Red lead the conference with 67 goals and an average of 3.72 goals per game. Katie McMahon and Alex B. Berman are Denison's top scoring threats. McMahon has 16 goals and 40 points, while Berman has chalked up 18 goals and 37 points.
On the flip side, Denison also leads the NCAC in goals allowed, yielding just 16 in 18 games played. Goalkeeper Laura Campbell has a 1.07 goals against average and a .789 save percentage.
The winners of Wednesday's two semifinal games will meet Saturday for the championship game, which will be held at the site of the highest remaining seed. The winner of the championship game receives the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Live stats and
