GRANVILLE, Ohio – The third time was the charm for the Kenyon College field hockey team. After dropping two regular-season games to rival Denison University, the No. 3-seeded Ladies upset the No. 2-seeded Big Red, 1-0, in Wednesday's semifinal round of the four-team North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
The win vaults Kenyon into the NCAC championship game against the No. 1-seeded DePauw University Tigers, who were 6-0 winners over No. 4-seeded College of Wooster in Wednesday's other NCAC semifinal game. The championship game will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at DePauw's Blackstock Stadium.
Kenyon will enter that championship game with a 13-6 overall record, the program's best mark since the 2006 squad concluded its season with an 18-6 record. Denison, which saw its 13-game win streak snapped, fell to 17-2, its best record since the 1980 season.
The Ladies' trip to the championship game, their third in the past ten years, was made possible by a goal from senior
Susie Gurzenda. In the game's 53rd minute, fellow senior
Alex Bair drove into the circle and passed over to Gurzenda, who launched her shot into the lower left corner of the Denison cage. It was Gurzenda's second goal of the season and Bair's seventh assist.
The Kenyon season was also kept alive by senior goalkeeper
Sydney Carney-Knisely, who made ten saves and recorded her fourth shutout of the season. Carney-Knisely and the Kenyon defense were plenty busy, but up to the task, as they faced an 18-6 deficit in shots taken and a 12-5 deficit in penalty corners.
