SAINT PETER, Minn. – Perhaps there was a little bit of a revenge factor involved in the Kenyon College men's tennis team's first-round match of the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Division III National Indoor Championship. Friday, the No. 2-ranked Lords demolished the No. 12 ranked North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops, a team that defeated Kenyon by one point last season.
The Lords rolled to an 8-1 win, dropping just one doubles match, and advanced to the Championship's semifinal round, where they will take on California Lutheran University, another team that edged Kenyon by a point last season. The Lords and the Kingsmen, ranked No. 11, will battle at 2 p.m. CST Saturday with the winner advancing to Sunday morning's title match.
In addition to the Kenyon team victory, senior
Paul Burgin won his No. 1 singles match and became the Lords' all-time leader in singles wins. Burgin defeated Robert Kjellberg, 6-4, 6-3, upped his season record to 13-4, and improved his career mark to 82-28. Burgin also paired up with
Sam Geier to defeat Peter Hviid and Johan Ljungdahl, 8-5, in the No. 2 doubles match.
At No. 3 doubles, Kenyon senior
Kevin Ye and sophomore
Wade Heerboth racked up another 8-5 win over Marcus Pola and Mikhail Konnov. The two split up and were also successful in singles play. Heerboth recorded a convincing 6-0, 6-4 victory over Ljungdahl at No. 3 and Ye rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win against Pola at No. 6.
Kenyon is now 3-1 this season. North Carolina Wesleyan dropped to 2-2.
