CLAREMONT, Calif. – On February 28th, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association tabbed the Kenyon College Lords as the No. 1 team in its national NCAA Division III poll. Sunday, the Lords finally had a chance to defend that ranking and they did so with a precise 9-0 victory on a neutral court against the No. 25-ranked Swarthmore College Garnet.
The win for Kenyon (6-1) kicked off a week-long stay on the west coast in which the Lords will participate in four dual matches and one tournament. The loss for Swarthmore (2-1) was its first of the young spring season.
Sophomore
Michael Razumovsky was one of five Lords to win both his singles and doubles matches. He and senior
C.J. Williams put up Kenyon's first point of the day with an 8-3 win over Anthony Collard and Max Kaye at No. 1 doubles. Later in the day, with Kenyon already leading 4-0, Razumovsky put away Max Sacks in the No. 2 singles match, 6-1, 6-2, to clinch the team win for Kenyon.
Kenyon's other big guns came through with equally impressive performances. No. 1 singles player
Paul Burgin disposed of Collard by virtue of a 6-4, 6-2 score. Kenyon's No. 3 singles player,
Wade Heerboth, then posted a quick 6-1, 6-2 win over Kaye. Burgin also collected a win at No. 2 doubles, while Heerboth did his part in a win at No. 3 doubles.
The Lords get right back at it Monday with matches against Azusa Pacific University and Stevens Institute of Technology.
