AZUSA, Calif. – The Kenyon Lords men's tennis team played well into the night on Monday, completing the second of two matches scheduled in two different locations. In the first of two matches Monday afternoon, the Lords were upended by the No. 11 Azusa Pacific Cougars, 7-2, before they rebounded with a win by the same score over the Stevens Institute of Technology (NJ). The split takes the Lords overall record to 7-2 on the spring season.
In Monday's late-night action that went into the midnight hour for those on the East Coast, Kenyon rebounded with a 7-2 win over the Stevens Institute of Technology. The Lords swept through singles play, taking all six flights to close out the win after holding a 2-1 lead with the completion of doubles play.
Michael Razumovsky took a close 7-5 first set over SIT's Chris Rosensteel and went on to clinch the match, setting the tone for the rest of singles play. Paul Burgin, ranked fourth in NCAA Division III singles play, edged out Matthew Heinrich (6-4, 7-5) before Wade Heerboth, CJ Williams, Tim Rosensteel, and Kevin Ye all rattled off wins in succession to clinch the match.
In Monday's early afternoon action, the Azusa Pacific Cougars, previously an NAIA team that is in its first year in NCAA Division II, took three Top-35 individuals into singles play and wound up winning five of the six flights. The Lords' lone singles winner, Jacob Huber, went on to earn a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Whitman Hough.
The combination of Kevin Ye and Wade Heerboth beat Frederik Wilkens and Gary Yam in doubles play, 9-8 (7-3) to give Kenyon its other team point. Azusa Pacific went on the win the additional two doubles flights to add to the Cougars' victory.
The split improves the Lords overall record to 7-2 overall, backing their No. 1 national ranking among NCAA Division III schools. Kenyon will take on Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, Calif. on Tuesday, March 12, at 2 p.m. PST.
