CLAREMONT, Calif. – Taking on three nationally-ranked squads in two days, the Kenyon College men's tennis team ended up posting a 2-1 record at the Stag-Hen Invitational. The Lords opened Invitational play Friday with a 5-4 win over Skidmore College and then a 9-0 loss to host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Saturday, the Lords rebounded with a 7-2 win over Bowdoin College.
Kenyon, now 10-3 and ranked as the No. 1 team in NCAA Division III, did not fare well in doubles play throughout the Invitational. The struggles started immediately against No. 25-ranked Skidmore. The Lords dropped all three doubles matches to the Thoroughbreds (3-2), but rallied to win five of the six singles matches. That late run for Kenyon resulted in a 5-4 team win and a spot in the Invitational's semifinal round.
The Lords were matched up against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the semis. The Stags, ranked as the No. 4 team in the nation, used another 3-0 surge in doubles play, combined with home-court advantage, to deal Kenyon a 9-0 defeat.
Saturday morning, the Lords put the loss behind them and focused on defeating No. 5-ranked Bowdoin (4-2) in a consolation match. This time around the Kenyon men got off to a good start, taking two of the three doubles matches. Momentum carried over to singles play and the Lords concluded their spring-break stay in California with a 7-2 win.
Throughout the three Invitational matches, four Lords posted 2-1 singles marks.
Paul Burgin did so playing in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.
Wade Heerboth logged both of his wins at No. 3, while
C.J. Williams and
Tim Rosensteel chalked up their wins at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (8-1) went on to defeat No. 2-ranked Emory University, 8-1, in the Invitational's title match.
