PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The No. 1-ranked Kenyon College Lords showed little difficulty in handling the No. 24-ranked University of Mary Washington Eagles during a non-conference neutral-site tennis match Sunday. The Lords shuffled their doubles lineup just a bit, but still delivered an 8-1 win.
The victory was Kenyon's fifth in its last six matches and it improved the Lords' overall record to 11-3. The loss dropped Mary Washington to 9-8.
Kenyon tweaked its pairings at No. 1 and No. 2. In the top spot, freshman
Sam Geier paired with sophomore
Michael Razumovsky, but ended up falling, 8-3, to Evan Charles and Donato Rizzolo. At No. 2 doubles, the Lords had more success. Seniors
Paul Burgin and
C.J. Williams joined up and hung on for a 9-7 decision over Tyler Carey and Kaleb Nguyen.
Following doubles play, Kenyon swept the six singles matches. Burgin took over at No. 1 and rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory. His doubles partner, Williams, produced a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.
In between those matches, Razumovsky won at No. 2 singles,
Wade Heerboth took the No. 3 match,
Tim Rosensteel won at No. 5, and
Jacob Huber rounded out the straight-set wins by chalking up a 6-3, 6-0 victory in the No. 6 match.
The Lords now have a significant break before their next match, which is scheduled for April 6, at home, against Case Western Reserve University.
