FORT MYERS, Fla. – Kenyon baseball extended its current winning streak to three games in the team's third day at the Gene Cusic Classic with a commanding 14-2 victory over the Wilmington College Quakers. The team exploded for 10 runs in the fourth inning, rattling off seven hits during the outburst while helping freshman Spencer Byers earn the win in his first collegiate action.
Wilmington took an early 2-1 lead after capitalizing on a pair of Kenyon errors in the field, but that lead was short-lived after Jesse Weiss tied the game with a run-scoring double to left field that plated Jake Dunn.
The Lords later sent 14 batters to the plate as a part of their 10-run fourth inning. Mike Danziger led things off by reaching on an error before back-to-back base knocks helped Kenyon take its final lead of the game, 3-2. With the bases loaded and only one out, the fourth through sixth hitters of the Lords' order all posted extra-base hits, including Nate Lotze's base-clearing triple to increase Kenyon's lead to 7-2. The Lords added three more runs by way of RBI singles from Danziger and Andrew Dunn to take control of the game, 10-2.
Kenyon added a run in the sixth and the ninth inning to end the game with a 14-2 score.
Byers (1-0) went seven innings in his first action wearing a Lords uniform. He earned the win behind a strong, quality start in which he allowed only four hits and two runs, none earned, while striking out five Quaker hitters.
Kyle Hardacker and Matt Wagnitz both led the Lords with three hits each, helping Kenyon total 16 hits on the day. Lotze notched a team-high three runs batted in.
The win improves Kenyon's overall record to 4-1 as it continues its stay at the 2013 Gene Cusic Classic. The Lords will have the next two days off after playing four games in the last three days. They will return to the diamond for a doubleheader against Mitchell College on March 8 at the Player Developmental Center in Fort Myers, Florida. The doubleheader is set to begin at 10 a.m.
