GAMBIER, Ohio –
Paul Burgin made history for the Kenyon College men's tennis team by becoming the program's all-time winningest player. The feat was part of the Lords' sixth straight win in their 6-3 victory over No. 16 Carnegie Mellon University, Sunday afternoon.
Burgin came into the match tied with 2011 graduate Jeremy Polster who ended his career with 163 combined wins. The senior defeated CMU's Christian Heaney-Secord (6-3, 6-2) to achieve his record-breaking 164th all-time victory to take the top spot in Lords history. Burgin currently possesses the all-time wins mark in singles play which he set earlier this season, now standing at 91 in his career.
The Lords fell behind 2-1 early in the match after doubles play concluded. The combination of Kevin Ye and Wade Heerboth won Kenyon's lone doubles match by an 8-6 score to kick off the day but dropped the next two before entering the second half of the match.
After Burgin made his mark on history, evening the score at 2-2, Jacob Huber helped the Lords take the lead with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Harsha Rao. After C.J. Williams survived a three-set victory, Michael Razumovsky clinched the match with a hard-fought 7-6, 7-5 win over Abhishek Alla. His win marked the second time in as many years that the sophomore decided a match against the Tartans after doing so last year in the Lords' 5-4 win.
Heerboth was the lone Lords player to earn multiple victories, also winning his singles flight match over Duke Miller (6-4, 6-3).
No. 2 Kenyon (15-3) will engage in two North Coast Athletic Conference matches simultaneously on Monday, April 15 against The College of Wooster and Oberlin College, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
