MEADVILLE, Pa. – Following a 2-1 loss in a pitchers' duel between Allegheny College and Kenyon College, the Lords rebounded in a big way to capture an 8-6, come-from-behind victory in Sunday's nightcap. Tim Krahn inherited a five-run deficit but kept the Gators at bay while the Lords' offense ignited to support their pitcher in the win. The split helps the Lords toward a 17-11 overall record and 4-6 mark in North Coast Athletic Conference play.
Despite putting the first run on the board in game two, Allegheny battered Kenyon starting pitcher Spencer Byers for five runs while sending all nine hitters to the plate in their first at bat. The Gators took a 6-2 lead into the fifth frame when back-to-back doubles by Nate Lotze and Kyle Hardacker aided the Lords in chipping into the lead. Lotze returned to the plate in the seventh and deposited a solo homer to draw Kenyon within a run, 6-5.
The Lords took advantage of a new arm on the hill for Allegheny when three of their first four batters reached base to load the bases against reliever Paul Vojtek (3-2). Matt Wagnitz led the inning off with a pinch-hit single and later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at six. The Gators loaded the bases for Jesse Weiss, who plated the eventual winning run with a sacrifice fly to left field. The Lords added a second run via another wild pitch by reliever Steven Ramsdell to secure their lead, 8-6.
Krahn (2-2) came on in the fourth and pitched six masterful innings to assist the Lords' comeback. He surrendered only three hits and kept the Gators' bats quiet, never allowing a runner past second base. He cruised through the seventh and eighth innings and forced a double play on a line out to right field to end the game. He struck out six hitters and walked only two while garnering the win.
In game one, Dierke (4-2) pitched his way through four innings of near-flawless baseball including three of his five strikeouts to keep the Gators off of the board. He went six innings in the seven-inning game and allowed only two runs on six hits.
The senior hurler surrendered just one base knock in his first four innings of work before Allegheny plated the game's first run. That run came in the fifth on a groundout to the right side, scoring a runner from third. The Lords tied the game in the top of the sixth off a run-scoring single by Andrew Dunn, but the Gators bounced back with a run in the bottom half. James Kim plated the game-winning run with a single to left center field and Kyle Davis (1-0) closed the door on Kenyon with a one-two-three seventh inning. The Lords were held to just three hits, all by different players, in the loss.
The remaining games of this series will be played on Tuesday, April 23 at Slippery Rock University due to incoming weather. The Gators and Lords (17-11, 4-6 NCAC) will play a doubleheader at Jack Critchfield Park beginning at 6 p.m.
