OBERLIN, Ohio – After the first two games of this weekend's series between Kenyon College and Oberlin College went the way of the Lords, the Yeomen came back on Sunday with a pair of wins to split the series. Both teams went back-and-forth in game one before the Yeomen stole a 10-9 victory away from the Lords in walk-off fashion followed by Oberlin closing the series with a 12-2 win.
The lead swung both ways early in game one when Kenyon scored the first run of the opening game, but quickly were put back in a 3-1 hole after the close of the first inning. Kyle Hardacker hit his second home run of the season as part of a two-run inning that tied the game, 3-3, before a two-run single by Andrew Dunn put the Lords ahead in the third.
Oberlin put together back-to-back two-run innings to take an 8-5 lead over the Lords heading into the seventh and final inning. Kenyon brought the top of the lineup to the plate in the visiting half of the seventh and put runners on the corners where Jesse Weiss grounded into a fielder's choice to score one of the team's four runs. Hardacker posted his second run batted in with a single to left, bringing the Lords within one run of the Yeomen. With two outs and runners on second and third, freshman Sam Gillespie delivered a base hit that found its way through the right side to score both runners and put the Lords ahead, 9-8.
With one at bat remaining, the Yeomen made it count getting off to a strong start with a single from leadoff hitter Mitch Novak. Novak later scored from second on a single by Mike McDonald to tie the game when with the bases loaded and one out, Andrew Hutson hit a walk-off single through the right side to clinch a 10-9 win.
In game two, Kenyon took an early lead by way of sacrifice fly by Weiss in the first but the Yeomen put up a pair in the home half. Mike Jeffers shut down the Oberlin lineup over the next four innings, including three straight three-and-out innings, before Dan Balcocchi hit a three-run home run in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie.
Oberlin went on to bat around the order and put up seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning led by run-scoring singles from the seven, eight, and nine hitters of the Yeomen order. The hosts then put together a trio of RBI doubles, scoring the next three runs and ending the game by run rule, 12-2.
With Sunday's sweep, the Lords fall to 14-8 overall with a 3-5 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) mark after splitting the weekend series with Oberlin (11-11, 4-2). Kenyon will engage Wittenberg University in a four-game set on April 13 and 14. The first half of the doubleheader will be held at McCloskey Field on Friday with the latter half hosted by Wittenberg on Saturday.
