GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College men's basketball team's offensive woes continued Saturday as the Lords shot just 37.9 percent from the floor and came up on the short end of a 62-54 North Coast Athletic Conference decision with the visiting DePauw University Tigers.
Kenyon (6-7, 3-3 NCAC) has now been held to 60 points or less in its last three games and has shot a combined 34.5 percent during the skid. To make matters worse Saturday, the Lords connected on only 50 percent (7-of-14) of their shots from the free throw line. DePauw (10-3, 5-1 NCAC), a team that also had its problems finding field goals, shot 70.8 percent (17-of-24) at the line.
The shooting struggles didn't entirely knock Kenyon out of the game. In the first half, the Lords led most of the way. DePauw turned things around at the mid-way point and then, during the last eight minutes of the contest, the Lords whittled a 15-point deficit down to a four-point deficit. Unfortunately for the Purple and White, as soon as they pulled up close DePauw's Adam Botts drained a three-pointer that all but iced the game. The Lords never got closer than six points the rest of the way.
Botts finished with 13 points for the Tigers, but it was Tommy Fernitz, a 6-9 center, who was the biggest thorn in the Lords' side. He tossed in a team-high 14 points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass.
While the Kenyon offense bogged down, the defense put up a good fight, forcing 11 turnovers and blocking ten shots, one short of the team's season-high. Sophomore center
Brien Comey, who had to deal with Fernitz for most of the game, got his first collegiate start and racked up a team-best five blocks. The Kenyon defense also held the Tigers to just 38.5 percent shooting on the afternoon.
One Kenyon player who seemed impervious to the shooting pains was
Brian Lebowitz. The senior forward connected on 7-of-9 shots and rang up a game-high 17 points.
Ikenna Nwadibia added 16 points and seven rebounds to the Lords' totals, while
Julian Pavlin pitched in with seven points and
John Bray tallied six rebounds.
Kenyon will try to turn things around Wednesday when it makes the short trip to Granville, Ohio to face rival Denison University in another conference contest that will tip off at 8 p.m.
