CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The Kenyon College men's basketball team ran into all kinds of weather and traffic problems on its way to battle the Wabash College Little Giants at Chadwick Court Saturday night. The tip-off, originally scheduled for 7:30 p.m., was delayed by more than 90 minutes and the Lords never really looked to get in sync during a 61-52 North Coast Athletic Conference loss.
After spending most of the afternoon and evening on the bus, the Kenyon men opened the game against the Little Giants by missing their first ten shots. It wasn't until the 10:07 mark that junior
Cooper Handelsman connected on the team's first field goal. By that time, Wabash already held a 10-2 lead. The Little Giants, however, weren't exactly shooting the lights out either and that gave the Lords the opportunity to pull with four points after
Jonathan Amador nailed a three-pointer with 4:30 left in the half.
That bucket capped a 6-0 Kenyon run, but it was about the only highlight of the first half for Kenyon, which shot just 19.2 percent (5-for-26) and went into the break facing a 24-16 deficit.
To their credit, the Lords (7-8, 4-4 NCAC) quickly began to turn things around in the second half of play. Senior
Ikenna Nwadibia scored the team's first five points after the intermission and then Amador popped in another three-pointer to cut Kenyon's shortfall to two points (26-24). Later, a couple of
Brian Lebowitz free throws pulled Kenyon within one point and a third trey from Amador knotted things up at 29-29 with 15:11 showing on the clock.
Kenyon moved ahead for the first time when Nwadibia added another field goal and the Lords built their largest lead (36-34) after yet another Amador three-ball. That lead, however, lasted only one minute as Wabash's Kyle Aiton answered with a three-pointer of his own. A couple minutes later, Aiton downed a pair of free throws that put the Little Giants up for good.
Aiton, who finished with a game-high 24 points, went on to spark a 9-2 run for Wabash (4-10, 3-5 NCAC) and put the game away for good.
Kenyon shot at a better rate in the second half, but still finished the contest at a season-low 25.0 percent (17-of-68). Amador ended up with 12 points on 4-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc. Nwadibia posted team-highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Lebowitz pitched in with eight points and eight rebounds.
The schedule ahead doesn't get any easier for the Lords, who host Wednesday a No. 9-ranked Wittenberg University team that is coming off back-to-back losses.
