GREENCASTLE, Ind. – With the help of double-double performances from Ikenna Nwadibia and Brian Lebowitz, the Kenyon College men's basketball team made an offensive splash in its 75-67 win over DePauw University at Neal Fieldhouse, Saturday afternoon. The duo combined for 32 points and 27 rebounds against one of the nation's top defenses to get back to .500 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.
Nwadibia jumped out to shoot 5-for-7 from field goal range in the first half, accounting for 10 of his 22 points on the night. The senior scored six of those first-half points during the Lords' run to claim a nine-point lead. With the Lords holding on to a one-point lead, 19-18, Kenyon (11-12, 8-8 NCAC) then scored the next nine points in a row, started by a steal and layup going the other way by Tim Connolly. DePauw (16-7, 11-5 NCAC) worked back to trim the lead to three points before the end of the half.
Ten of Kenyon's 31 points in the opening half were scored off of six Tiger turnovers. Coming into the game, DePauw ranked 29th in the country in fewest turnovers (234). The Tigers turned the ball over 10 times by game's end.
The lead eviscerated six minutes into the second half which began a blow-for-blow battle between the two teams. Neither team led by more than three points until the final 10 minutes of the contest. Kenyon began to separate itself, once again with the aid of Nwadibia, heading into the game's final eight minutes. DePauw's Bradley Fey and Nwadibia went back and forth with consecutive field goals coming from each side. Julian Pavlin chipped in a pair of his 19 total points to extend the lead out to seven points, 59-52.
Pavlin became integral in keeping their distance from the Tigers down the stretch. He scored eight points in the final 3:35, six of which came from the charity stripe. DePauw made a brief threat to come back after Pat Haggin hit a three-pointer to cut Kenyon's lead to four points, 69-65, but Pavlin and the Lords won the free throw shooting battle in the waning minutes to stay ahead to the final horn.
Coming into the game, DePauw featured a defense that ranked 25th in the country by allowing an average of 62.5 points per game. Kenyon not only bested that margin but improved their offensive output by 21 points from their previous meeting with the Tigers that resulted in a 62-54 loss on Jan. 11.
Nwadibia led both sides with 22 points and added 13 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season. He finished shooting 10-for-18 from the field. His 13 rebounds tied a season high he achieved twice before this season.
Lebowitz quietly rang up his numbers over the course of the game. He posted a modest 10 points but collected a game-high 14 rebounds, which also ties a career high twice matched before. The senior now has eight double-doubles on the year.
Kenyon now holds a slight edge over Denison University (11-11, 7-8 NCAC) for the No. 5 seed with two games to play in the regular season. The Lords will next play Wittenberg University (17-5, 11-4 NCAC) in their final regular season road game on Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
