GAMBIER, Ohio –
Brian Lebowitz made his last home game inside Tomsich Arena one to remember for himself and his three classmates. Along with a trio of new season highs in rebounds, blocks, and points scored, he also set a new career defensive record while helping guide the Kenyon College men's basketball team to a 75-64 victory over the Wabash College Little Giants.
Lebowitz had a career game in Kenyon's win that included setting new season highs in points scored (28), rebounds (15), and blocked shots (5). His game numbers in blocks and points tied previous career highs while his 15 boards set a new career mark.
With Lebowitz's fifth and final block of the day, he set a new Kenyon record for blocked shots in a career. Lebowitz came out from under the hoop and contested a three-point attempt by Andy Walsh, grazing it to help leave it short. That block was his record-setting 162nd of his career, surpassing Chris Donovan '95.
Lebowitz scored the Lords' first six points and added another deuce to help them jump out to a 14-2 lead. From there, Kenyon (12-13, 9-9 NCAC) kept building its advantage to as many as 13 behind a team shooting percentage of 42.3 percent in the first half. Wabash (8-16, 7-11 NCAC) cut into that lead over the last three minutes with inside work by Pete Nicksic accounting for the Little Giants' final four points. Kenyon went into the half with a 30-24 lead.
Wabash kept the ball rolling and created a one-possession game in the opening minutes of the second half. Daniel Purvlicis hit two jumpers, one of which brought Wabash to within a bucket of the Lords, 32-30.
After makes by Cooper Handlesman and John Bray, Lebowitz made his presence known by causing a steal and taking it the other way on the fast break to increase the Lords' lead back to seven points. However, Wabash's resiliency kept them within arm's reach until Kenyon made one final run with less than eight minutes remaining. After converting a three-point play, Lebowitz scored on the Lords' next possession from a dish by fellow senior Julian Pavlin. With Wabash beginning to cool down offensively, he then benefitted from one of his many rebounds and went in for a second three-point play with a successful drive to the rim and a free throw make to extend the Lords' lead to nine, 61-52. A 9-2 run helped Kenyon grab a 12-point lead, enough to ride out toward the win.
Seniors Ikenna Nwadibia, Cameron Bell, and Pavlin joined Lebowitz on the floor for the opening tip and all had noteworthy days to aid the win. Nwadibia and Pavlin each ended the day with 11 points on a combined 7-for-13 shooting performance. Nwadibia added seven rebounds and four assists, while Pavlin chipped in one helper and two boards. Bell earned his first start of the season and in a season-high 17 minutes, put up two points, four rebounds and a block.
Kenyon's defense helped slow down a struggling Wabash offense, holding them to just a team shooting mark of 34.3 percent from field goal range. Houston Hodges led the Little Giants with 12 points off of the bench, the only Wabash player to finish scoring in double figures.
With Kenyon's win and Denison University (12-12, 8-9 NCAC) losing to Allegheny College (5-19, 2-15 NCAC) on Saturday, the Lords now possess the No. 5 seed in the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament by virtue of a tiebreaker. They will be matched up to play No. 4 seed Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio on Tuesday, Feb. 25. The game time for the first round game will be finalized later.
