HIRAM, Ohio – Kenyon College senior
Nate Lotze smacked seven hits Sunday and became the Lords baseball program's all-time hit leader, but he alone could not stop the host Hiram College Terriers from sweeping a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Terriers countered two Kenyon rallies and posted walk-off wins of 5-4 and 8-7.
Lotze entered Sunday's doubleheader with 187 career hits, just five shy of the Kenyon record set by Matt Marcinczyk '06. Just sniffing the mark wasn't good enough for Lotze, who blew past the record by going a combined 7-for-9 with three runs and five RBI against the Terriers. Lotze's hit parade included a double and two home runs. He is now the sole owner of Kenyon career records for hits (194) and RBI (130). He also holds the program's fielding records for most chances (955) and most putouts (855).
Unfortunately for Lotze and the Lords, the record-breaking performance was not accompanied by wins. In both of Sunday's games, Kenyon went into its final at-bat trailing by a run or more. Both times the Lords made up the deficit and both times Hiram responded with the game-winning runs in its final at-bats.
In game one, the Lords entered the seventh and final inning facing a 4-3 deficit thanks to a four-run fifth inning from the Terriers. With two outs,
Tyler Roldan drew a walk. Lotze then stepped to the plate and drilled a double to left field that scored Roldan and tied the game at 4-4. In the bottom of the seventh, Hiram's leadoff hitter Jaren Bell singled. Jeff Segal sacrificed him to second and Tim Calhoun's single scored him to end the game.
The Lords climbed out of an even deeper hole in game two. Down 7-4, the Kenyon men entered the top of the ninth with another rally in mind. Aided by three Hiram errors, the Lords made up the difference and knotted the game at 7-7. The only two hits Kenyon needed in the inning were singles from Lotze and
Jono Chafe.
Phillip Nam and Lotze both scored on Terrier miscues.
John Nahra got aboard on one of those errors and later came around to score on Chafe's base knock.
In a déjà vu moment, the Terriers manufactured a single run in the bottom of the inning and stole another win. This time around, Shane Haidet walked. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a single hit by Brandon Chesmar.
Lotze's monster day with the bat was supported by a combined 11 hits from Chafe,
Kyle Hardacker, and
Jake Dunn. Chafe finished the doubleheader 3-for-7 with a run and two RBI. Hardacker was 4-for-9 with a run scored and Dunn was 4-for-10 with another run scored.
The losses dropped Kenyon to 11-23 overall and 2-14 in the NCAC. That means the Lords will be the No. 5 seed in next weekend's NCAC Crossover Series and will head to Wittenberg University to finish off the season with a three-game set against the Tigers.
