GAMBIER, Ohio –
Thomas Morris had a career day on the mound while his fellow freshman classmates helped the Kenyon College baseball team will their way toward a come-from-behind, 2-1 victory over Oberlin College. That ending created an attitude that kept the Lords competitive in game two, however the Yeomen outlasted Kenyon in the latter innings of game two to defeat Kenyon, 7-4.
Morris (1-3) earned his third start of the season and first in North Coast Athletic Conference play and made the most of it. The freshman struck out seven Yeomen hitters and allowed just one run in seven innings. At one point, Morris retired seven batters in a row as part of three different one-two-three innings posted. The only run he allowed was due to a fielding error in the sixth. Morris struck out a career high seven hitters, five swinging.
The youth of the Lords shined in their final at bat where they began the rally that led to their win. Tyler Roldan hit a shot to third base but Jeff Schweighoffer's throw flew errant. With one out, sophomore John Nahra hit a double to deep left field, setting the plate for Sam Gillespie.
Oberlin brought in Mike McDonald in an attempt to close out the game following his success against the Lords in game one of the series. Gillespie grounded out to shortstop, but the Yeomen took the sure out and allowed one run to score. With the score 2-1, two out, and runner on third, freshmen Casey Rosenfeld came to the plate. Facing a 0-2 count, Rosenfeld plopped a blooper into shallow right field. Andrew Hutson sprinted inward and dove to make the catch, but as he rolled over the ball popped out of his glove and onto the ground, allowing Nahra to score the game-winning run.
Harrison Wollman (1-2) took the loss, despite holding the Lords to just three hits over his 6.1 innings of work.
Kenyon's offense stalled in game two, failing to obtain a hit until the sixth inning. Benjamin Whitener (1-1) took a no-hitter into his final inning of work. Holding on to a 4-0 lead, Phillip Nam not only spoiled the no-hit bid, but also began a rally than eventually ended Oberlin's chance at a shutout. Rosenfeld then began a streak of three straight hits by the top of the Lords' lineup that plated three runs. Jake Dunn singled to right, scoring Nam, just before Kyle Hardacker hit a base-clearing double to make for a one-run game, 4-3.
Both teams swapped runs in the seventh but the Yeomen's final break came in the eighth when they took advantage of a throwing error by third baseman Tyler Roldan. The error allowed one run to score before Justin Cruz hit a run-scoring single to put Oberlin up by three runs. A combination of five different pitchers combined to allow just one run to the Lords in the final three innings.
Paul Henshaw (1-3) drew the loss for Kenyon, despite allowing just four runs in six innings of work.
Despite earning its first conference win of the season, Kenyon dropped to 9-13 on the season. Their next action will be against Wittenberg University in a cross-division matchup. Two games will be played at McCloskey Field on April 12, beginning at 1 p.m. The series will close the following day in Springfield, Ohio.
