SPRINGFIELD, Ohio  – As the season draws to a close, the Kenyon College baseball team seems to be sporting its hottest bats yet this season. The Lords banged out 23 runs on 35 hits in their split with Wittenberg University on Saturday afternoon. Jake Dunn led Kenyon with seven hits, seven runs scored, four extra-base hits, and three RBIs. Sunday will mark the Lords' final day of the season as they vie for the series win on North Coast Athletic Conference Crossover Weekend.

Kenyon (12-24, 3-15 NCAC) displayed an explosion of offense in the middle innings of game one, blasting out eight of its 13 runs between innings four through six. John Nahra got the Lords on the board with a two-RBI triple that plated Tyler Roldan and Nate Lotze. Phillip Nam dished out the first of his three hits in the game by delivering an RBI double.

Despite the Tigers bringing in a relief pitcher in the fifth inning, the Lords continued to score at will, posting four more runs in their next at bat. Dunn led the inning off with a single and later came around to score by way of a fielder's choice. Casey Rosenfeld earned an RBI the hard way, getting pegged with the bases loaded before the Lords went on to score twice more. That sequence set the score at 7-0.

In Dunn's fourth trip to the plate, he launched his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth inning. Five more runs were added to the Lords' scoring line with three tallies in the eighth and two more in the ninth frame. Roldan cranked out his fourth hit of the game with an RBI double. The freshman field day continued when Nam hit his first collegiate home run to left field the following inning. He finished with three RBIs after game one.

Wittenberg (11-28, 4-14 NCAC) scored three times in the bottom of the ninth, but not before Tim Krahn finished his masterful day on the mound by shutting down the Tigers' offense. Wittenberg mustered just nine hits against the junior, but only five came before the start of the ninth inning. Krahn (2-1) went the distance in just his second start of the season, where he struck out three hitters and induced 15 fly outs. He retired nine in a row at one point and 12-of-14 Tigers during the middle innings in Kenyon's 13-4 win.

Though Kenyon spotted Wittenberg a couple of runs after the first inning, the top of the Lords lineup helped them not just claw back into the contest but jump out to a 6-4 lead. Run-scoring singles by Kyle Hardacker and Roldan tied the game up, 3-3, in the second inning. After the Tigers took a slim lead in the home half, Dunn prolonged his tremendous day with a two-RBI double which was ripped down the left field line. He later came around to score for the third of four times after Roldan dropped in yet another run-scoring single.

With the score 6-5, Kenyon took another leap forward with a three-run fifth inning. Wittenberg's Tyler Hutchinson helped the Tigers to once again draw within a run, taking Matt Delbridge deep in the sixth. The lead shifted to the host's side the following inning. Aaron Patrick's pinch-hit, RBI single tied the ballgame, and the Lords made another move to the pen. Josh Jacobvitz hit the hill but surrendered two consecutive walks, one with the bases loaded to allow the eventual game-winning run to score.

The Lords' final attempt came up a tad short. Three wild pitches by Frank Sullivan (1-1) allowed Jackson Celestin to score, but Jonathan Long came in with one out in the ninth and retired the two batters he faced to end the game, 11-10.

Dunn finished the doubleheader with his best offensive day of the season, going 7-for-11 with seven runs scored and four extra-base hits, including three doubles. He had 13 total bases and three runs batted in. Roldan followed closely behind with six hits with Hardacker and Nam finishing with five, each. Hardacker led the Lords with four RBIs while five different Kenyon players ended the day with three.

The series and one spot in the NCAC overall standings hangs in the balance with one game left to play. Sunday marks the final game of the 2014 campaign where these two teams will meet again at Carleton Davidson Field for a 12 p.m. first pitch.
