Division I Cleveland State tops Lords

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Kenyon men tallied multiple event wins but came up a little bit short as NCAA Division I Cleveland State University earned a 134-108 dual-meet victory against the Lords on Saturday.

Kenyon had contributions from across its roster starting first from the 200-yard medley relay team. Ben Baturka, Luis Weekes, Cheran De Silva and Tommy Weiss teamed up to take the runner-up spot in a 'B' cut time of 1:29.71. That was just 0.33 seconds off of first.

Senior Connor Rumpit then delivered the team's first win. In the 1,000-yard free, he posted a season-best mark of 9:23.83. Rumpit doubled up on the long-distance events later, winning the 500 in 4:29.03. That also made 'B' cut standards.

Following David Fitch's runner-up finish in the 50 free (20.71), in which he was just 0.09 seconds away from first, senior Mick Bartholomew added the team's third win. In the 200 individual medley, Bartholomew touched the wall in 1:50.21, another 'B' cut.

De Silva, a newcomer, earned an individual victory, as well, for the Lords. Competing in the 200-yard butterfly, he clocked a personal-best time of 1:48.89 while Fitch claimed second place. Both marks met 'B' cut standards.

Kenyon's final win came from Weiss. He won by 0.02 seconds in the 100-yard free with a mark of 45.72.

There were also three more runner-up finishes for Kenyon: Bartholomew in the 200 back (1:48.38); Kieran Allsop in the 200 breast (2:04.31); and Weiss, Fitch, De Silva and Chris Rutter in the 400 free relay (2:59.25). All those times met 'B' cut standards.

In diving competition, Mason Fishell took fourth on the 1-meter board while Drew Albrecht earned the same placement on the 3-meter.

The team will now prepare for the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship (NCAC) which is set to begin on February 12 at Denison University's Trumbull Aquatics Center.
