Aubakirov recognized for community service efforts

KANSAS CITY, Missouri -- The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) recognized Kenyon College men's basketball player Kamal Aubakirov for his outstanding community service efforts in his home country of Kazakhstan.

Thursday, the association announced that Aubakirov was one of just ten players nationally to be named to the NABC Community Assist Team.

Aubakirov and his brother, Askar, run 360 Mentors, a nonprofit organization helping mentor students in Kazakhstan. The organization offers college counseling and SAT test preparation to students in order for them to pursue a higher education.

In addition to his resourcefulness within his community, Aubakirov has also made substantial on-court contributions for the Lords. The Kenyon guard shot 37 percent from both the field and three-point range during the 2019-20 season. On January 29, 2020, he scored a career-high 17 points against Oberlin College.

Following today's release of the ten-member Community Assist Team, the NABC plans a more detailed story about these difference-makers, including Aubakirov, in its upcoming October edition of Time-Out magazine.
