Owls handle OWU with ease in first home meet

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Friday night, the Kenyon College women's swimming and diving team hosted its first home meet of the 2022-23 season. The defending national champions went up against Ohio Wesleyan University and delivered a 196-25 win to improve their early-season dual meet record to a perfect 3-0.

Eleven swim events and two diving events were held, and the Owls won them all. Sophomore Jennah Fadely and first-year Gwenyth Eisenbeis led Kenyon, each registering a pair of individual-event victories. Fadely claimed first place in the 100-yard freestyle (52.44) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.02). In between those races, Eisenbeis was the fastest in the 50-yard freestyle (24.16) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.47).

Seniors Ania Axas and Olivia Smith tacked on a couple more wins for the Owls. Axas won the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.75) and Smith nailed down first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.48).

Other individual-event winners for the Owls included junior Lauren Barrabee, sophomore Gabrielle Wei and first-year Molly Haag, who won the 1000-yard freestyle (10:28.99) uncontested. Barrabee was victorious in the 500-yard freestyle (5:21.31) and Wei was first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.67).

In relay competition, Barrabee joined Nikola Kovacova, Caleigh Wukitch and Vaso Manakou to win the 400-yard medley relay (4:07.10). At the end of the meet, Axas and Kovacova teamed with Alexandra White and Ella Campbell to win the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:33.13).

On the diving boards, the Owls went uncontested. Junior Katarina Ilic ended up besting her teammates in both events. On the one-meter board, she chalked up a score of 395.45 and on the three-meter, she rang up a 465.65.

Kenyon jumps right back into the pool tomorrow morning as it goes up against long-time rival Denison University beginning at 10 a.m.
