Owls shatter records, secure five titles on day three

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Day three at the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championship opened the same way as day two for the Kenyon College men's swimming and diving team: with a win by Bryan Fitzgerald. The senior started the night with an NCAC title in the 400-yard individual medley, his third straight conference crown in the event. Fitzgerald notched a time of 3:52.21, pacing the field by more than two seconds and setting a new season-best for the Owls.

It was just the start of a stellar night for the Owls, who were victorious in five of six events.

Marko Krtinic made it two-for-two for the Owls in terms of NCAC titles, earning a record-setting victory in the 100-yard butterfly. The junior clocked in at 47.11, the first NCAA 'A' Cut of the NCAC Championship. Krtinic also set an NCAC and pool record and recorded a new personal-best mark. Cherantha De Silva, who held the NCAC record with a time of 47.31 in 2020, finished third with a time of 47.60.

It took three events for the Owls to claim three conference championships, and Yurii Kosian kept Kenyon rolling with a win in the 200-yard freestyle. The junior won a closely-contested race by 0.07 seconds, clocking in at 1:40.03 to add 35 points to the Owls' team total.

Kenyon, 59 points behind Denison through the 20th event, finished 3-4-5 in the 100-yard breaststroke, the only event of the night that ended without a conference crown for the Owls. Nick Hong (55.75), Luis Weekes (55.77), and Mirjavohir Marvarov (55.80) paced Kenyon in the race.

The Owls emphatically got back to business in the 100-yard backstroke, notching five of the top six finishes and the top four overall times. Daniel Brooks clinched the title in the night's final individual event, setting an NCAC record and personal best for the junior with a time of 47.77. The top three finishers were separated by just 0.08 seconds as Djordje Dragojlovic (47.80) and Yurii Kosian (47.85) were not far behind. Spencer Pruett (49.70) kept the line going for Kenyon in fourth.

With four individual championships in five events, the Owls added a team title in the 400-yard medley relay to close the night. Brooks, Weekes, Krtinic, and Dragojlovic added to their strong individual performances by combining for a time of 3:12.71. The time set an NCAC record, a pool record, and a Kenyon varsity record, besting the previous program-best of 3:13.89 set by Kosian, Weekes, David Fitch, and Liam Sweeney on November 18, 2021. Brooks broke his second 100-yard breaststroke record of the night, swimming the opening leg of the relay in 47.53 seconds to reset the mark of 47.77 that he swam earlier in the evening.

Despite dominating the day, the Owls still face an 11-point deficit ahead of the fourth and final day of the NCAC Championship. Denison University leads the way with 1265.5 points, while Kenyon is close behind with 1254.5. The Owls will have a chance to come back and clinch the title on day four, which opens with preliminary heats at 9:30 a.m. before final heats at 6 p.m.
