After delays, Owls get going at Big Red Invitational

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- After multiple delays because of rain, the Big Red Invitational got underway Friday night at Denison University. The meet went unscored, but the Kenyon College Owls managed 13 individual top-10 finishes, including one event win.

The win came from junior Riley Orth, who took gold in the shot put. On his fourth attempt, he turned in a toss that measured a season-best 48-10 (14.88 meters). Orth also went on to log a sixth-place finish in the discus, just ahead of teammate Samuel Eluemunoh. Orth's best throw traveled 131-5 (40.07 meters) and Eluemunoh's seventh-place measurement spanned 130-9 (39.85 meters).

Sticking with the field events, junior Dylan Fuerst had some solid showings in the jumps. In the high jump, he placed fifth, clearing 5-8 ¾ (1.75 meters) and in the long jump, he went 19-8 ¼ (6 meters) for a seventh-place finish.

Kenyon's other top-10 finish in field events came from first-year J'Sun Gardner, who claimed a seventh-place finish in the javelin. His best throw came in at 110-11 (33.80 meters).

On the oval, the Owls switched some things up. Sophomore Tapiwa Gono Phiri stepped aside from sprints and ran the 400-meter race in 51.74 for a fourth-place finish. In the same event, Jonathan Turner grabbed 10th place with a time of 53.88.

With Gono Phiri absent in the sprints, junior Collin Witt took over. He clocked in at 11.67 in the 100-meter dash. That was good for a seventh-place finish. He also ran the 200-meter dash and finished in 22.93, which was good for fifth place.

Typically a distance runner, first-year Noah Hopkins tried his hand at the 400-meter hurdles and wound up in seventh place with a time of 1:19.43.

Finally, in the 800-meter race, Kenyon had a trio of top-10 finishers. Leading the way was first-year Robert Enslein, who took seventh place in 2:01.72. Not too far behind him were junior Jack Caine and first-year Dylan Sibbitt. Caine placed ninth in 2:05.46 and Sibbitt finished tenth with a time of 2:07.80.

Kenyon now will focus on the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference Championship. The decathlon starts this weekend at Oberlin College with the rest of the championship events taking place next weekend at Ohio Wesleyan University.
