Kenyon records fall at All-Ohio, Bucknell

DELAWARE, Ohio -- Led by a record-breaking performance from its 4x400-meter relay team, the Kenyon College Owls earned a total of 22 points Saturday and finished in 12th place at the All-Ohio Outdoor Track & Field Championship, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.

The Owls relay team of Julius Thompson, Marius Mazeika, Kudzaishe Mhere, and Josh Greville posted a time of 3:21.22, which was good for third place in the event and was just two seconds off the winning time. Additionally, that time goes down in the record book, breaking the program's previous record of 3:21.94 set in 1991, nearly 35 years ago.

Meanwhile, a few other Kenyon team members participated in the Bison Outdoor Classic, held at Bucknell University. Of that group, sophomore Charlie Blackmer had the most impressive showing, clocking in with a program record 3:51.73 in the 1,500-meter race. His time bested Kenyon's previous record of 3:54.47 set by Aaron Emig in May of 2004. Blackmer was running against many NCAA Division I athletes and ended up placing 45th in a field of 86.

Back at the All-Ohio, Greville, a senior, who was a part of the record-setting relay tacked on two points to the Kenyon total by finishing seventh in the 400-meter run. He clocked in at 50.26.

In distance events, the Owls tallied eight points between results of the 10,000-meter run and the 3,000-meter steeplechase. In the 10,000, senior Joshua Breard placed fourth, gaining five team points with a personal-record time of 32:23.05. In the steeplechase, Dylan Sibbitt, also a senior, recorded a personal best 9:55.71, placed sixth, and added three more points to the Kenyon team total.

Kenyon's output in those two events nearly got a boost from a few runners finishing just outside of the top-eight scoring positions. In the 10,000, Henry Rodrigues finished ninth (33:24.57) and Noah Hopkins finished tenth (33:28.91). In the steeplechase, John Coffin finished ninth (10:08.96) and Luke Galik finished tenth (10:13.04). Of that group, all but Rodrigues rang up personal bests.

In field events, sophomore Graham Yeager led the way for the Owls. He registered four team points with a fifth-place finish in the discus, flinging the plate 141-7 (43.16 meters).

Senior Ezekiel Kiwanuka contributed a seventh-place leap in the long jump. His best effort measured 21-0 ¾ (6.42 meters), which was a personal best and added two more points to the Kenyon total.

First-year Zavier McGhee, like his teammates in the distance events, just missed out on the scoring. He placed ninth in the triple jump (40-7) and tenth in the high jump (5-9 ¼).

Other runners at Bucknell included seniors Colt Murphy and Owen Rodstrom, who placed 25th and 29th, respectively, in a field of 59 runners who completed the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Murphy clocked in at 9:38.49 and Rodstrom crossed the line in 9:31.05. Both of those times were personal records, as well.

In the 5k, also at Bucknell, sophomore Charlie Menzel turned in a time of 15:27.08, which was yet another personal record and landed him in 13th place in a field of 38 runners.
