Orth's record leads Owls at Fighting Scots Invite

WOOSTER, Ohio -- Competing for the first time in 2024, Kenyon College's men's indoor track and field team went north to compete in the Fighting Scots Invitational, hosted by The College of Wooster. The Owls participated in 11 of the meet's 16 events, tallying 67 points and placing fifth in the five-team standings.

Kenyon started the day off on the right foot and scored points in all three field events it competed in. Riley Orth shined for the Owls, racking up 20 points after earning first-place finishes in the shot put and weight throw. The senior set a school record with a 14.19-meter (46-6 ¾) toss in his sixth and final attempt in the weight throw, breaking the 13.72-meter (45-0 ¼) indoor mark set by Dylan Brintwood on February 18, 2022. In the shot put, Orth paced the field with a distance of 14.32m (47-0) that came on his second attempt.

The weight throw produced three more points for the Owls as Samuel Eluemunoh placed sixth with a 10.21-meter (33-6) showing on his second attempt. Fellow sophomore Josh Greville also gave the Owls another three points with a personal-best mark. In the long jump, Greville registered a leap of 5.92 meters (19-5 ¼) on his fourth attempt and placed sixth.

When the event moved onto the track later in the day, Owls student-athletes combined to score 41 points across six events. Collin Witt, Tapiwa Gono Phiri, Kendall Weaver, and Jonathan Turner kicked the scoring off in the 4x200-meter relay. The quartet clocked in with a time of 1:33.08, placing fourth and earning five points. Arthur Wellenstein added a point in the next event, the mile, where the first-year finished 10th at 4:35.44.

Gono Phiri and Weaver hit the starting blocks again in the 60-meter dash, and the duo combined for 10 more Owls points. Gono Phiri secured a spot on the podium with a time of 7.13 seconds, good for third, while Weaver, a first-year, was not far behind in fifth with a time of 7.24. Witt also contributed to additional points in an individual event. The senior tacked six points onto Kenyon's score after placing third in the 200-meter race with a time of 23.33.

The meet's penultimate event, the 3,000-meter race, produced Kenyon's best total points production (13) of any track event and tied the weight throw for the best overall output as three Owls added to the team's total. Sam Rabieh, a junior, led the way and secured second with a time of 9:10.18 that cleared his previous personal best by over 14 seconds. Sophomores Henry Rodrigues (9:19.47) and Joshua Breard (9:25.65) placed fifth and eighth, respectively, with Rodrigues' time marking a personal best.

The Owls rounded out the day by scoring six more points in the 4x400-meter relay. The Kenyon team of Witt, Gono Phiri, William Wilson, and Turner placed third with a time of 3:41.04, just 0.35 seconds behind second and 2.18 seconds back of first.

Wooster took the top spot in the team standings with 160 points. Denison University (141.5) was the runner-up, while Oberlin College (122) and Allegheny College (82.5) rounded out the top four.

Kenyon will be back in action next week on Saturday, January 27, when the Owls head to Wittenberg University to compete in the annual Steemer Showcase.
