Owls have strong showing in field events

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's track and field team participated in Saturday's Lid-Lifter meet, hosted by Denison University. Although team scores were not tabulated, the Owls had 16 top-10 individual finishes, including two event wins.

Most of the team's top performance came in field events, where sophomore Graham Yeager and first-year Zavier McGhee led the way. Yeager turned in a winning toss in the discus. His best attempt measured 144-1 (43.93m), coming up just a couple feet short of his personal best. Yeager also placed ninth in the hammer throw, with a heave of 129-0 (39.31m). In the triple jump McGhee launched himself 40-6 (12.34m) for the win.

Not too far off from McGhee, senior Ezekiel Kiwanuka placed third in the triple jump, covering 38-1½ (11.62m). Kiwanuka also logged a fifth-place finish in the long jump. His best attempt measured 19-4 (5.89m).

Continuing in field events, first-year Henry Thill was eighth in the discus with a best throw of 127-4 (38.83m) and Leo Elder, also a first-year, took sixth in the javelin with a throw that went 116-1 (35.40m).

In the pole vault, Noah Bartlett, also a first-year, cleared 11-7¼ (3.54m) for eighth place, while over in the high jump competition, Kenyon had two top-10 finishers. Both McGhee and sophomore Marius Mazeika cleared 5-7¾. McGhee did it on his first attempt to take sixth place, just ahead of Mazeika.

In running events, the Owls loaded up in the steeplechase. Senior Owen Rodstrom was the fastest Owl to the line. He crossed in 9:40.61 to take second place. Fellow senior Colt Murphy was third in 9:42.31. Two more Kenyon seniors, Dylan Sibbitt and Noah Hopkins finished seventh and eighth, respectively, while sophomore Luke Galik took 10th.

The Owls' only other top-10 runner was Mazeika, who took ninth place in the 400-meter race, stopping the clock at 52.50.

Next up for the Owls will be the two-day College of Wooster Invitational, which starts Friday and concludes Saturday.
