Canonico claims All-Region recognition

GAMBIER, Ohio -- D3football.com released the organization's annual All-Region ledger on Wednesday, and Andy Canonico corralled a spot on the 2024 All-Region 4 Team. The award is Canonico's first All-Region recognition, and it came after helping lead a dominant Kenyon College defense over his stellar senior season.

Canonico was one of the top four defensive ends in Region 4, securing a second-team selection for his work at the position. Besides being one of six defensive ends across the three teams, Canonico was one of 78 total players to earn All-Region honors. He is Kenyon's first All-Region honoree since 2022 and the program's eighth individual and 11th overall All-Region selection.

The teams, selected in balloting by Region 4 sports information directors and D3football.com staff, were chosen from 164 nominations by full Division III member schools. Players nominated for All-Region are eligible to be considered for D3football.com All-America honors, which will be announced on Thursday, January 2.

Canonico's All-Region award followed a senior campaign that also included All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) First Team honors, his third straight all-conference selection after consecutive seasons on the second team. The defensive lineman started all 10 games for the Owls, racking up 16 tackles-for-loss and seven quarterback sacks to lead the team. Those totals ranked second and fifth, respectively, amongst NCAC players over the regular season, and he is tied for 23rd amongst all NCAA Division III players in tackles-for-loss. Additionally, the senior tied for second on the team with 52 total tackles and had the second-most quarterback hurries (6). For good measure, he added a forced fumble and a blocked kick.

Canonico has been a force over his four years in Gambier, playing in all 40 of Kenyon's games over his time with the College. The Kailua, Hawaii, native compiled 178 total tackles, 49 tackles-for-loss, and 18.5 sacks in his career while chipping in four forced fumbles and blocked kicks and tallying a pair of fumble recoveries and pass breakups. In the Kenyon record books, he ranks second all-time in tackles-for-loss and is tied for eighth all-time in sacks.

This year, Canonico helped the Owls compile a 5-5 (4-4 NCAC) record, the program's first .500 or better mark over the last 12 seasons. Canonico and the Owls defense held opponents to 2,855 yards, the program's best mark since 1986 (2,807), and allowed just 22.3 points per game, the program's best average since 1999 (21.6).
