Owls win six events in home Tune-Up

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Getting ready for the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship, the Kenyon College Owls hosted The College of Wooster and Denison University in an unscored Tune-Up meet Friday night at Toan Track.

Ezekiel Kiwanuka, a sophomore, notched Kenyon's first win of the evening by taking the long jump over teammate Kendall Weaver. Kiwanuka's best was 20-7 ¾, while Weaver's best measured 20-6 ¼. Kiwanuka didn't quite reach his season-best mark, but Weaver did, topping his previous best of 18-10 ½.

In throws, senior Riley Orth claimed a pair of top-two finishes. First, in the weight throw, he placed second with a heave that traveled 44-9 (13.64 meters). Later, Orth claimed victory in a shot put field of 13. His best throw measured 51-4 ½ (15.66 meters).

Then, in the mile, Kenyon grabbed the top three spots with junior Sam Rabieh leading the way. He clocked in with a winning time of 4:38.56. Right behind him was senior Keegan Minahan, who finished in 4:45.07 and sophomore Colter Murphy claimed third place with a run of 4:46.24. All three times were season-bests.

Another Kenyon event win was registered in the 400-meter race. Senior Jonathan Turner was fastest in a field of nine as he crossed the finish line in a time of 53.29.

The 800-meter race was won by Kenyon sophomore Owen Rodstrom with teammate William Wilson right on his tail. Rodstrom clocked in at 2:05.18 and Wilson took second in 2:05.45. Those times were both season-bests.

Before the individual track events came to a close, junior Emmanuel Makelele gave Kenyon a second-place performance in the 60-meter dash (7.23), senior Joe Hindle added a third-place run in the 200-meter race (24.84) and sophomore Noah Hopkins tacked on a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter race (9:29.52).

In relays, Kenyon's 4x200-meter team went uncontested. The crew of Makelele, Tapiwa Gono Phiri, Weaver and Collin Witt ended up generating a time of 1:33.26.

Kenyon will continue to play host Saturday and Sunday, as it entertains conference athletes for the NCAC heptathlon and pentathlon.
