Kenyon completes comeback, claims NCAC title

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Trailing by as many as 129 points Thursday and 100 points Friday, the Kenyon College Owls reached another level Saturday and rallied to win the 2024 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championship. The team title was Kenyon's second straight, third in the last four seasons and the 26th in program history.

Having finished each of the first three nights of the championship in second place, Kenyon made a push late Friday and closed within 10 points of the host Denison University Big Red. Saturday, the Owls rattled off four event wins, set two conference records and surpassed the Big Red. When the night was over, Kenyon climbed to the top spot in the standings with 1,889 points.

Denison finished second with 1,845 points. Wabash College was third with 1,218.5 points, while The College of Wooster (1,165.5) and Oberlin College (1,058) rounded out the top-five in the nine-team field.

As things began to unfold during the championship's final night, Denison chalked up a win in the session-opening 1,650-yard freestyle. Kenyon countered with first-year Roman Savage, who took the runner-up spot in a season-best 15:39.62. The Big Red, however, claimed three of the next four spots and extended their lead to 30 points over the Owls.

Denison also won the next event, the 100-yard individual medley, but Kenyon seniors nailed down three of the top five spots and pushed the Owls past the Big Red on the team leaderboard. Marko Krtinic placed second in 50.01, Mirjavohir Marvarov was third in 50.35 and Vaughn Hajra claimed fifth place in 53.22. That flurry gave Kenyon a 24-point advantage over Denison.

Kenyon then tacked on first- and second-place finishes in the 200-yard backstroke to pump its overall lead to 33 points. Senior Yurii Kosian led the way by successfully defending his 2023 title in the event, finishing this year's race in an NCAC Championship record time of 1:44.87. Right behind him was sophomore Ethan Manske, who clocked in with a season-best 1:47.43 to take second place.

The Owls kept pouring it on in the next event, which was the 100-yard freestyle. Like Kosian, sophomore Djordje Dragojlovic defended his 2023 title in the event. He did so by posting an NCAC Championship record time of 43.51. He also was part of a Kenyon trio that claimed the top three spots in the event. Junior Aleksa Dobric took over second place in 44.04 and senior Daniel Brooks claimed third place in 44.75. Junior Aleksa Kisic tacked on a seventh-place showing and the Owls zoomed ahead of the Big Red by 107 points.

Denison did creep a little bit closer at the conclusion of the 200-yard breaststroke, but a third-place performance from first-year Noel Tumbasz and a sixth-place finish from junior Sam Brown, kept the Owls' lead in a comfortable spot. Tumbasz clocked in with a season-best 2:00.55 and Brown turned in a time of 2:05.96.

With just two events left in the championship, Kenyon held a 67-point advantage over Denison.

Next was the 200-yard butterfly and Kenyon senior Noah Hargrove picked the right time to claim the first NCAC individual-event title of his career. Hargrove held off a trio of Denison swimmers to triumph with a time of 1:48.41, just missing his career best of 1:48.38. His efforts helped Kenyon go into the final event with a 36-point edge over the Big Red.

The Owls then closed out the championship in style, winning the 400-yard freestyle relay by nearly five seconds. The Kenyon quartet of Dragojlovic, Brooks, Kosian and Dobric slammed the door shut with a time of 2:56.38.

During the post-meet presentation and celebration, Kenyon senior Israel Zavaleta was named the NCAC Diver of the Year for the third straight season. He is just the second diver in Kenyon history to accomplish the feat.
