GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College's men's indoor track and field team tallied a trio of second-place finishes at the annual Bob Shannon Invitational, a 17-event meet hosted by Denison University. The Owls added a pair of third-place finishes and scored points in seven of the 11 events they competed in, racking up 51 points to finish sixth in the nine-team field.
Kenyon flipped its usual script as most of the team's points came on the track rather than the field. The Owls displayed their prowess in distance races, with 26 of the team's total points coming in events over 400 meters.
The 3,000 meter, the meet's penultimate event, accounted for 15 points on its own. Seniors Keegan Minahan and Jack Caine finished back-to-back in second and third, respectively, while first-year Theo Hordon tacked on a point with an eighth-place finish. Minahan was the race's runner-up with a time of 9:26.35, and his classmate Caine was close behind at 9:31.45. Hordon crossed the finish line at 9:45.65, a personal best.
Riley Orth, another senior, secured second place in the weight throw, an event he has excelled in of late. For the third time in the last three weeks, Orth broke the College weight throw record. This time, his fifth attempt flew the furthest, traveling 14.91 meters (48-11) and breaking his own record of 14.29 meters (46-10) set last week. The record-setting toss landed Orth in second place.
Back on the track, Collin Witt rounded out the trio of seniors to place second during the meet. Witt clocked in at 52.24 in the 400-meter, just 0.07 seconds back of the top time. Fellow senior Jonathan Turner had a sixth-place showing in the same event, stopping the clock at 53.63 and adding three points to the team's score.
The Owls churned out 11 more points across two additional distance events. The quartet of Colter Murphy, Jimmy Baker, Robert Enslein, and William Wilson earned a spot on the podium in the distance medley relay with a time of 11:34.70 that ranked third. In the mile, juniors Peter Bernhardt (4:34.55) and Sam Rabieh (4:40.10) combined for five points after finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. Bernhardt's time was a season-best, while Rabieh's was a career-best.
Another field event, the long jump, accounted for five Kenyon points. Ezekiel Kiwanuka, a sophomore, landed 6.04 meters (19-2 ½) out to take fifth place. First-year Kendall Weaver recorded a 5.74-meter (18-10) leap on his first attempt, a personal best that earned eighth place. Tapiwa Gono Phiri also had an eighth-place showing to round out the Owls' scoring. The junior completed the 60-meter dash in 8.10 to add a point for Kenyon.
Albion College totaled 142 points to top the team standings. The hosting Big Red placed second with 110.5 points, while Washington & Jefferson College rounded out the top three with 93 points. The College of Wooster (60) and Muskingum University (54) edged out the Owls in fourth and fifth, respectively.
The All-Ohio Championship is next for Kenyon, who heads to Westerville, Ohio, on Saturday, February 10. The meet is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. at Otterbein College.
