MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Kenyon College's men's track and field team opened its outdoor season at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational from March 14-16, a three-day meet hosted at the Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Owls tallied 19 points after scoring in four events, finishing tied for 15th in the 33-team field that included institutions from all NCAA divisions.
Kenyon student-athletes set or tied two program records and 13 personal records. The Owls orchestrated seven top-10 finishes in event finals, including one gold medal and two fifth-place showings.
Riley Orth posted Kenyon's best individual finish and was responsible for 11 total points. The senior scored 10 points when he won the shot put with a 15.36-meter (50-4 ¾) mark and another point with an eighth-place showing in the hammer throw. His toss landed 46.99 meters (154-2) away, shattering his own program record of 44.81 (147-0) set last spring. Orth had a busy meet as he also competed in the discus throw, finishing 14th at 40.55 meters (133-0).
Kenyon's remaining eight points came from a pair of fifth-place finishes in distance races. First-year Arthur Wellenstein ran a personal-best time in the mile, clocking in at 4:22.20, while junior Peter Bernhardt crossed the finish line at 15:43.37 in the 5000-meter race.
