Owls post two more records at Tiffleberg Open

TIFFIN, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's track and field team had a memorable day at the Tiffleberg Open on Saturday, recording program records in two events and logging eight top-10 individual placements.

The meet, a combined effort between Tiffin University and Heidelberg University, was unscored and featured a field of NCAA teams, from all three divisions, that competed at Heidelberg's Hoernemann Stadium and Tiffin's Paradiso Athletic Complex.

One of Kenyon's top results came just two events into the track slate. Emmanuel Makelele, Collin Witt, Julius Thompson and Tapiwa Gono Phiri combined to put up a time of 42.30 in the 4x100-meter relay. That mark earned them a second-place finish in the race and topped the previous Kenyon record of 42.62 set back in the 2013 season. The only team to beat the Kenyon quartet was a foursome from Ashland University, an NCAA Division II institution, that clocked in at 41.52.

In field events, senior Riley Orth led the way for the Owls. He hurled the shot put 50-10 ¾ (15.51 meters) to finish in fifth place. That mark topped the previous Kenyon record of 50-9 ½ (15.48 meters) set by Jordan Potter in the 2019 season.

Orth wasn't done there. He went on to post another solid performance hammer throw. His best attempt, his second, traveled 153-6 (46.79 meters). That gave him a 14th-place finish in the field of 47 throwers and just missed the Kenyon record of 154-2 (46.99 meters), which Orth set two weeks ago in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Back on the track, Witt went on to post a time of 50.29 in the 400-meter race. He finished eighth among 30 other runners and his time was a personal best, clipping his previous best of 50.41.

Other individual top-10 showings for Kenyon came from Dylan Fuerst, Arthur Wellenstein and Henry Rodrigues. Fuerst tied for fourth place in the high jump, clearing 6-0 ¾ (1.85 meters). Wellenstein took seventh place in the 800-meter run, clocking in at 1:58.13, and Rodrigues chalked up a ninth-place finish in the 5,000-meter race, crossing the line in PR of 15:50.88.

Kenyon runners also did well in the steeplechase. Peter Bernhardt led a trio of Owls to top-10 finishes. He placed fifth with a time of 10:08.44. Owen Rodstrom placed seventh with a time of 10:14.83 and Noah Hopkins claimed eighth place, finishing in 10:18.50.
