DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's outdoor track and field team finished 10th at the annual All-Ohio Championship, a 12-team meet hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University. Despite being unable to climb up the rankings after finishing ninth in last year's All-Ohio Championship meet, the Owls tallied 40 points as a team, 2.5 more than last year and the program's most since at least the 2008 season. Riley Orth played a major role in the team's finish by garnering gold, and Kenyon compiled five top-five finishes overall.
Orth added to his illustrious career by winning the All-Ohio title in the shot put for the second time in three seasons. The senior bookended a silver-medal finish in 2023 with gold-medal showings in 2022 and 2024, and he did so with a record-setting performance this season. Orth's best toss measured 15.81 meters (51-10 ½), resetting his own program record of 15.51 meters (50-10 ¾) that he posted a few weeks ago on March 30.
In addition to the 10 points he tallied in the shot put, Orth scored three team points with a sixth-place showing in the hammer throw. His best hurl landed 46.53 meters (152-8) out. Another senior, Dylan Fuerst, rounded out Kenyon's scoring in field events. Fuerst finished fourth to add five points in the high jump, recording a personal-best leap of 1.91 meters (6-3 ¼).
The rest of Kenyon's scoring came on the track as the Owls scored in both of Friday's distance events and racked up five scoring finishes on Saturday. Tapiwa Gono Phiri had a stellar showing in sprints, earning a spot on the podium in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. The junior clocked in at 10.88 in the 100, crossing the finish line just 0.02 seconds behind the second-place finisher to take bronze. Gono Phiri matched the third-place showing in the 200, where he stopped the clock at 22.49.
The 200 was a productive event for the Owls as Collin Witt crossed shortly after Gono Phiri. The senior placed fifth after clocking in at 22.65, a personal-best time in the event. Witt had a big day, posting another personal-best finish when he ran the 400-meter. He crossed the finish at 50.02, which also goes down as a season-best for Kenyon.
Kenyon's three other point-scoring finishes came in distance events as three Owls posted eighth-place finishes. On Friday, Owen Rodstrom led the way as the Owls finished 8-9-10 in the 3000-meter steeplechase, and Keegan Minahan helped Kenyon place eighth and ninth in the 10,000-meter. Rodstrom tallied a time of 10:24.38, while Minahan's 32:53.89 pace was a season-best for the Owls. Joshua Breard rounded out Kenyon's scoring on Saturday when the sophomore crossed the finish line in eighth at 15:35.98 in the 5,000-meter. His time was just 0.05 seconds back of seventh and is the top time in his career.
After two straight outings at Ohio Wesleyan, the Owls head home to host the Duane Gomez Invitational next weekend on April 20. Kenyon's annual home meet, which marks the team's penultimate regular-season outing, is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
