Owls take home title at Duane Gomez Invitational

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's outdoor track and field team hosted the second annual Duane Gomez Invitational on Saturday, and the Owls came away with the win in their home meet. Kenyon tallied 142 points over 14 events, including six wins, taking first place in the seven-team field.

The Owls were pursued closely by fellow North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) competitor Wittenberg University. The Tigers tallied 134 points in second place, while another NCAC institution, The College of Wooster, placed third with 116. Denison University (85.5), Mount Vernon Nazarene University (68), Muskingum University (61.50), and Ohio Wesleyan University (25) rounded out the standings.

Running events accounted for 88 of Kenyon's points, and the Owls had a hot start on the track. The team won the first three running events in which they competed, taking first place in the 4x100-meter relay, the 1,500-meter race, and the 400-meter dash. Tapiwa Gono Phiri contributed to two of those first-place finishes, leading off the relay and pacing the field in the 400. Collin Witt, Jonathan Turner, and Josh Greville teamed up with Gono Phiri to run the 4x100 relay in 43.72 seconds, and the junior clocked in at 49.90 in the 400, a personal-best time and the team's fastest mark this season.

Witt was not far behind in the 400, stopping the clock at 50.45 to place second. The event was worth 20 points for Kenyon, as Turner's seventh-place time of 53.60 added two points. The trio added more to the team's tally in the final running event, the 4x400-meter relay. Running with Vaughn Hajra this time, the relay quartet claimed another gold-medal finish with a time of 3:29.93. Another Kenyon quartet placed third in the 4x400 as Dylan Sibbitt, Colter Murphy, William Wilson, and Peter Bernhardt clocked in at 3:40.61.

All four of those Owls added additional points in other races. Bernhardt won the 1,500-meter race with a time of 4:06.70, a team-best for Kenyon this year. Murphy placed second in the event at 4:07.17, a personal best, while Joshua Breard also posted a personal best when he crossed fifth at 4:19.90.

Wilson and Sibbitt went 2-3 in the 800-meter race, checking in at  2:00.24 and 2:00.96, respectively. Wilson's second-place time was the fastest finish of his career. The 5,000-meter race rounded out Kenyon's scoring on the track. Owen Rodstrom placed sixth at 16:09.63, just ahead of Alex Shepherd (16:21.54) in seventh.

Kenyon also had plenty of success in field events. Riley Orth led the way for the Owls, lording over the throwing rings. The list of superlatives to describe the senior seems to run out as he reset another shot put record. Orth's best toss measured 15.86 meters (52-0 ½), beating out his week-old program record of 15.81m (51-10 ½) set at the All-Ohio Championship. The senior added points in two other throwing events, placing third in the hammer and fourth in the discus. His best hammer hurl landed 46.41 meters (152-3) out, while his best discus dish went 42.31 meters (138-9), Kenyon's season-best.

Samuel Eluemunoh added a point in the discus despite placing 11th due to unattached competitors placing higher inside the top eight. The sophomore's best throw measured 37.91 meters (124-4). J'Sun Gardner, another sophomore, scored in the javelin when he placed sixth with a 37.73-meter (123-9) throw.

A pair of Owls produced points in jumping events to round out the team's scoring. Dylan Fuerst had the best finish, garnering gold in the high jump. The senior's top mark measured 1.85m (6-0 ¾), which tied another competitor, but Fuerst earned 10 points and the top spot in the standings. Ezekiel Kiwanuka secured a spot on the podium in the triple jump, placing third with an 11.25-meter (36-11) leap. His distance was a career-long and a team-best this season. Fuerst and Kiwanuka also scored in the long jump, placing third and fourth. Fuerst narrowly out-jumped his teammate, measuring in at 6.26 meters (20-6 ½) to edge out Kiwanuka's 6.25-meter (20-6 ¼) mark.

After a first-place finish in the penultimate outing of their regular season, the Owls will be looking to maintain their momentum when they take the short trip to Granville, Ohio, next weekend. Kenyon will compete in Denison's annual Big Red Invitational on Friday, April 26, before gearing up for the NCAC Championships, starting with the combined events from April 27-28.
