GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's outdoor track and field team took the short trip to Granville, Ohio, to take part in the Big Red Invitational hosted by Denison University. The Owls posted four first-place finishes at the unscored meet while adding a pair of bronze-medal finishes on Friday.
Riley Orth, the reigning North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Athlete of the Week, continued to outperform his own outstanding expectations, placing first in both throws events in which he competed. The senior's best showing came in the hammer, where his best hurl measured 49.82 meters (163-5). The toss shattered his program record of 46.99 meters (154-2) set on March 14. Orth also stayed hot in the shot put, tallying a fourth straight first-place finish in the event. His winning mark measured 15.84m (52-0), just half an inch short of his program record from last week.
Kenyon's two other first-place finishes came on the track. Peter Bernhardt was the first Owl to garner gold, winning the first running event in which Kenyon competed, the 1,500-meter race. The junior clocked in at 4:00.60, a personal-best that is the team's fastest time in the event this season.
Collin Witt helped the Owls go back-to-back when he won the 400-meter dash, the next race Kenyon ran in. The senior stopped the clock at 50.20 seconds, just a few ticks ahead of fellow senior Jonathan Turner. Turner timed out at 52.13, one of two personal-best times he posted at the meet, the other coming in the 200-meter dash.
Another senior secured a spot on the podium when Jack Caine claimed third in the 3,000-meter race. Caine clocked in at 9:30.52 to bring home the bronze medal, a Kenyon-best time in the event this season.
Five other Owls added top-10 finishes at the meet. The 800-meter race was a productive one for Kenyon as Jimmy Baker (2:06.75), Robert Enslein (2:06.84), and Alex Shepherd (2:11.82) placed seventh, eighth, and 10th, respectively. Keegan Miniahan crossed 10th in the 1,500 as the Owls placed 10th through 13th, and Emmanuel Makelele also cracked the top 10 when he clocked in at 11.56 in the 100-meter dash.
The meet gave Kenyon a final chance to gear up for the upcoming NCAC Championships. Josh Greville will get the Owls going when he competes in the NCAC decathlon in Oberlin, Ohio, over the next two days. The rest of the team will compete in the conference finale from May 3-4 right back in Granville.
