OBERLIN, Ohio -- Kenyon College's Josh Greville got the postseason going for the Owls men's outdoor track and field team, competing in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) decathlon over the weekend. The sophomore scored 5,683 points over two days of competition, placing fourth in the field of eight at Oberlin College's Robert Kahn Track.
Greville's finish gives the Owls five points toward the team's tally at the upcoming NCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Kenyon will join the conference in Granville, Ohio, over the weekend as Denison University hosts the league finale from May 3-4.
Two of Greville's three best showings came on Saturday when he ranked fourth through one day of competition. The sophomore ended his day with a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at a career-fastest 51.82. The personal best was one of four that Greville recorded over the day's five events, and he notched seven collegiate-best marks over two days and 10 events.
Saturday's other personal-best results included a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.48), a sixth-place showing in the long jump (5.94 meters (19-6)), and a seventh-place finish in the shot put (8.98 meters (29-5 ½)). Greville also placed fifth in the high jump with a 1.73-meter (5-8) leap.
Sunday's events saw Greville secure another silver-medal spot when he placed second in the decathlon's final event, the 1,500-meter race. His time of 4:46.31 was another personal best, one of three on the day. One event before the 1,500, the Kane, Pennsylvania, native set his personal record in the javelin with a 40.40-meter (132-6) toss. Greville started the day with another fifth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking in at 16.89. The time was just 0.004 seconds behind fourth place, and it marked a season-best for Kenyon in the event and another personal-best mark. The pole vault produced another season-best for the Owls as Greville was Kenyon's first to compete in the event this season, placing fifth at 3.70 meters (12-1 ½). A sixth-place, 24.87-meter (81-7) showing in the discus rounded out Greville's decathlon results.
Denison's Jacob Brown paced the field with 6,504 points over the 10 events, giving the Big Red 10 points heading into the conference championships. DePauw University's Daniel Jansen placed second with 6,171 points, while Ohio Wesleyan University's Michael Strange rounded out the top three with 5,903.
