Orth closes stellar season, career with another record

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Looking to throw his hat into the ring of student-athletes heading to the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Kenyon College's Riley Orth stepped into the ring at the Mount Union Last Chance meet on Thursday afternoon. The senior continued his stellar season with yet another program-record performance in the shot put. However, Orth could not advance high enough in the national Division III standings as his, and Kenyon's, season came to a close.

Orth entered the day with the 36th-best mark in the shot put amongst all NCAA DIII men's competitors this outdoor season, and he was hoping to crack the top 22 individual performances to earn a spot in the upcoming NCAA Championships. The senior gave it his best shot and could not have asked for a much better result as he recorded a toss that broke his own Kenyon record, a fantastic feat that has almost become expected this season.

His best toss on Thursday measured 16.09 meters (52 - 9 ½), shattering his previous program record of 15.86 meters (52 - 0 ½) set on April 20. The mark would move Orth up to 26th in the DIII shot put rankings, but that means he would still barely miss the cut before even factoring in other last-chance meet results from around the country. Overall, he was fourth amongst competitors at Mount Union's Kehres Stadium.

Despite not having the chance to make his mark on the national stage, Orth ends his prolific career as one of the best throwers in Kenyon track and field history. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native's name can be found in multiple events in Kenyon's indoor and outdoor record books as Orth has lorded over the throwing rings for three impressive seasons. In outdoor competition, Orth holds the Owls record in the shot put and the hammer, setting both marks over the past two weeks. His throwing skills also translate to the indoor stage, where he has notched Kenyon's best mark in the shot put and the weight throw.
