GAMBIER, Ohio -- Former Kenyon College swimming and diving coach Richard Sloan passed away last month at the age of 88.
Sloan coached the men's team at Kenyon from the 1969 season through the 1975 season. His teams won seven Ohio Conference championships and, in his first season, his team was national runner-up. Four more of his Kenyon teams recorded top-10 placements at the national meet and, over his seven seasons, he coached eight individual national champions and more than 50 All-Americans.
Sloan's time at Kenyon also included seven seasons as the head coach of the men's tennis team. In that span, his team's produced an overall record of 48-25-1 and won the 1970 Ohio Conference championship.
In 1996, Sloan was inducted into the Kenyon Athletics Hall of Fame.
Following his stay at the College, Sloan became a successful swimming coach and administrator at The Ohio State University, serving as assistant to the director of athletics and as the head men's swimming coach for 14 seasons.
Sloan, a native of Evanston, Illinois, also gained a variety of national and international experience during his coaching career. In 1984, he coached on the U.S. Swimming International Team and was on the staff at the 1985 U.S. Olympic Festival. Additionally, he served on the board of directors of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
