Owls outlast Gators in extended NCAC play

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- It took 60 minutes of regulation, 20 minutes of overtime, and then a shootout, but the Kenyon College field hockey team outlasted the host Allegheny College Gators on Saturday to chalk up a 2-1 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) victory.

The win improved the Kenyon team's record to 4-8 overall and 4-1 within conference play. It was the Owls' fourth straight win over the Gators, who dropped to 2-7 overall and 0-4 in NCAC action.

Kenyon's lone goal in regulation hit the back of the Allegheny cage just about five minutes away from the half. When Allegheny tried to clear the ball out of its zone, Abby Sher stepped in front of the attempted pass, gained control, and fired a pass to her left, inside the Gators' circle. Junior Ella Adamec gathered the pass and fired a quick shot, but it was saved by Allegheny goalkeeper Rowan O'Toole. The rebound off the save bounced out to Casey Master, also a junior. She then flicked the ball back to Adamec, who put her shot on target, scoring her first goal of the season, as well as the first goal of her collegiate career.

In the third quarter, Allegheny turned up the intensity a notch, firing off six shots and earning three penalty corners. The last of those shots, which came at the 41:42 mark of the game, crossed the Kenyon goal line and knotted things up. That Gators' goal developed off a penalty corner with Maddy Keenan scoring off an assist by Emily Jackson.

Kenyon reversed the momentum in the fourth quarter, but didn't have anything to show for it. The Owls had two penalty corners and two shots, but couldn't deliver the game-winner. Meanwhile, the Kenyon defense held the Gators without a shot or corner in that final quarter.

The Owls went on to dominate the first overtime period, as well. They tacked on two more corners and three more shots, but couldn't get one past O'Toole. The same held true for the second overtime period. This time, however, Allegheny had a slight edge in offensive possession. The Gators earned a penalty corner right before the buzzer, but it yielded nothing, as Kenyon goalkeeper Lucy Baker turned aside a pair of Allegheny attempts.

The teams then went into a shootout to decide a winner. As the conference combatants took turns firing away, Baker emerged as the difference-maker. The first-year keeper did not let any of the four Allegheny attempts cross the goal line. The Gators' first shot of the shootout hit the right post, but that was as close as Allegheny would get.

Kenyon's first shootout shot came from Casey Master, who worked the right side and snuck her shot past O'Toole. Kenyon missed on its second attempt, but then sophomore Olivia Wangerow, who also worked the right side, converted the Owls' third attempt, one that held up as the game-winner.

In addition to Baker keeping the Gators off the board in the shootout, she also made nine saves on 10 Allegheny shots during regulation.
