Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Kenyon strikes first, but Denison has final say

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College field hockey team got Saturday's game going in the right direction with an early goal against Denison University. The host Big Red, however, responded quickly and tacked on two more second-half scores to claim a 3-1 North Coast Athletic Conference victory.

The Owls (4-9, 4-2 NCAC) put the pressure on early, as Henny Maher opened the game with a shot on goal that was saved by Denison goalkeeper Therese Lucian. Less than a minute later, the Owls earned a penalty corner. Abby Golub inserted the ball to Casey Master at the top of the circle. She then pushed a pass to her left, where Maren Lawrence loaded up a shot. Golub came off the goal line, stepped in front of the cage and deflected Lawrence's shot past Lucian.

The goal was Golub's fourth of the season and the assist was Lawrence's second.

That Kenyon lead had a short life, though. Within the next two minutes of play, Denison came back and fired in the equalizer. The Big Red score came at the 8:01 mark and was launched off the stick of Emma Gebhart.

The rest of the half continued to be evenly played. The score remained knotted at 1-1, while Denison had a slight 5-4 edge in shots and a 7-5 advantage in corners.

The Big Red (8-6, 6-1 NCAC) got the better of play in the third quarter and capped it off with a break-away goal Kathleen Keil, who finished off a long run and pass from Gebhart.

In the fourth, Denison upped its lead by one more after an initial shot was saved by Kenyon keeper Lucy Baker. The rebound off the save came out to Madden Phelps, who put the follow-up past Baker.

The second half, as the score would indicate, was controlled by Denison, which out-shot Kenyon 14-0 over the final 30 minutes. Baker made 10 saves to keep the Owls in the game, but it wasn't enough to halt the Denison attack.

With three more conference games left on the schedule, Kenyon sits in fourth place in the conference standings. Up next for the Owls is a home game on Wednesday against The College of Wooster (2-7, 2-3 NCAC).
