Kenyon captures first win of the season at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio – Coming off of matchups against two top-25 ranked opponents in consecutive weeks, the Kenyon College football team took on Oberlin College Saturday evening on the road for a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) showdown.

The Owls controlled both sides of the ball, resulting in season-high numbers across the board en route to a 57-2 victory for the team's first victory of the season and in the NCAC.

Kenyon (1-4, 1-2 NCAC) cracked the scoreboard with a special teams safety at 9:46 in the first, where a snap went over the Oberlin punter's head and into the end zone, forcing the Yeomen to boot it backwards to prevent the touchdown.

On the ensuing possession, Brendan Comerford scored the Owls' first offensive touchdown, a 37-yard strike from starting quarterback Ryan Dean down the seam for his second score of the season. After Dominic Simpson stole his second interception of the season on the following possession, Dean again found Comerford on a play action pass down the sideline for 53 yards and six points. The extra point was blocked and returned for two points for the Yeomen, resulting in a 15-2 score at 5:25 in the first.

To make it three straight drives with a score, Dean orchestrated a seven play, 31 yard drive the next time Kenyon got the ball resulting in a quarterback rushing touchdown, his first of the season.

Another special teams play led to great field position for the Owls, where a muffed punt recovered by Richard Grooms gave the visitors the ball on the 12 yard line, and Jordon Benjamin punched in the score four plays later to set the score 29-2 at 9:01 in the second.

Jackson Belyn snatched the team's second interception of the day on the next drive, failing to convert it to points, but Michael Kerr's fumble recovery two drives later did turn into a touchdown, as Julius Thompson converted on the team's fourth forced turnover of the day to give his team a 36-2 lead, which the Owls would take to the half.

After the break, Kenyon wasted no time in building its lead, as Benjamin took the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter 47 yards to the house to put the Owls up 43-2. Drew Morgan took over quarterbacking duties after the score and dished out two more touchdowns in the third, one a 53 yard strike to Charlie Taylor and the other an eight yard toss to Aydan Key to give the team the 57-2 advantage.

Kenyon set season highs in total yards (448), rushing yards (175), rushing touchdowns (4) and passing touchdowns (4) on the offensive end, and added to it with best marks in yards allowed (69), forced turnovers (5) and tackles for loss (13.0) on defense.

Dean finished nine of 18 for 175 yards and two touchdowns, the latter a new career high. Comerford led the receivers with six catches for 157 yards and two scores, setting a career high for yards, touchdowns, and longest reception (53). Benjamin headlined the rushing efforts with seven attempts for 73 yards and two touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, Kerr highlighted his career day with a team leading six tackles, two sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery. To go along with his interception, Belyn led the defensive backs with three pass break ups, while Matthew Ehrenreich chipped in two sacks to tie Kerr.

Kenyon will head back to Gambier for its next matchup, a conference meeting with the Wabash College Little Giants at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18 from McBride Field.
