Bishops deal Owls first conference defeat

DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College field hockey team's three-game North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win streak came to halt Wednesday at Selby Stadium, where the host Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University jumped out to an early lead and pulled out a 4-1 victory over the Owls.

Ohio Wesleyan (5-5 overall, 4-1 NCAC) didn't waste much time in lighting up the scoreboard. Following a reset after a Kenyon foul at the top of the circle, Ohio Wesleyan's Grace Ammon worked the ball from left to right through the Kenyon zone. Then, just 2:18 into the game, she fired a shot from about 10 yards out, beating Kenyon goalkeeper Lucy Baker to the lower left corner of the cage.

A little more than eight minutes later, the Battling Bishops doubled their lead with a goal from Avery Slucher. That goal developed off a penalty corner and Ammon was credited with the assist.

The Battling Bishops' lead moved to 3-0 about three minutes into the second quarter. Again, the home team used a penalty corner to up its advantage. After Ammon released a shot, her teammate, Mary Powers, deflected it to her left. The deflection went right to Emma Reynolds who was positioned near the left post and tapped the ball over the line.

Four minutes later, Kenyon broke through. Fighting for possession along the right side of the Ohio Wesleyan goal line, junior Rigby Zentner took a tough-angle shot that deflected into the Battling Bishops' goal. It was not only Zentner's first goal of the season, but the first in her collegiate career.

Similar to the start of the first half, the Battling Bishops scored a goal early in the second half. An initial shot from Emma Wright was not struck well, but the ball dribbled right to Morgan Leeper, who poked it past Baker and gave Ohio Wesleyan a 4-1 advantage.

Neither team put up much of an offensive threat in the final quarter of play and the game ended with Ohio Wesleyan in front of the three-goal margin.

The Battling Bishops ended up out-shooting the Owls, 15-3, and also had a 7-1 advantage in penalty corners. Baker made five saves for Kenyon, while Payton Mindel needed to make just one for Ohio Wesleyan.

Kenyon (3-8, 3-1 NCAC) has another road game on tap and will head to Meadville, Pennsylvania on Saturday to battle with the Allegheny College Gators.
