WOOSTER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College football team racked up 454 yards of offense on Saturday, but never posed a threat to The College of Wooster Fighting Scots, who rolled to a 49-6 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) victory at John P. Papp Stadium.
Wooster held a slim 7-0 lead after one quarter of a play and then erupted for 35 points in the second quarter to put the game out of reach by halftime. With the win, the Fighting Scots improved to 5-4 overall and 4-3 in NCAC play.
The loss, Kenyon's third in a row, dropped the Owls to 1-7 overall and 1-5 in conference competition.
During that game-deciding second quarter, the Wooster offense went aerial on Kenyon. Quarterback Michael Boyle threw for touchdown passes of 68, 55, 29, and 77 yards. Two of those tosses went to Tate Journell, one went to Jordan Lewis, and one went to Cam Grago. In the middle of those four touchdowns, the Wooster defense registered a 73-yard interception return from Louie Lindsay.
By the end of the game, the potent Wooster air attack saw Boyle throw for 430 yards and six touchdowns on 17-of-30 attempts. Lewis finished with 165 receiving yards and two touchdowns, Journell had 135 yards to go along with his two TDs, and Crago, who also ended up with two scores, tallied 105 receiving yards.
Kenyon tried to counter with its own passing attack, however, the Owls struggled to be as efficient. The Owls' two quarterbacks ended up a combined 21-of-47 for 304 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.
Ryan Dean saw the better part of those numbers with 210 yards on 31 attempts.
In the third quarter, after Wooster already owned a 49-0 lead, the Kenyon offense avoided the goose egg. The Owls put together a 10-play, 70-yard drive that concluded with Dean hitting receiver Tyler Gladden for a 29-yard scoring strike.
Gladden, a sophomore, wound up having a big day. In addition to his touchdown, he put up a team-best 110 receiving yards on seven receptions. Damian Snell, a first-year, backed that up with 97 receiving yards on six catches, as the Owls reached a season high in yards through the air.
On the ground, Kenyon racked up 150 yards on 37 carries. Drew Morgan led the way with 42 yards. Jordon Benjamin had 37 yards, and Julius Thompson had 34.
On the other side of the ball, Wooster didn't have much success running against the Kenyon defense. The Owls held the Fighting Scots to just 39 rushing yards on 20 carries.
Kenyon will return to Gambier for its next game, which will be Saturday against Denison University. Prior to the game, the team will celebrate Senior Day.
