Graves gashes Albion, Owls get third win

ALBION, Mich. – The Kenyon College men's basketball team tipped off in the first game of the Mike Turner College Classic on Friday night, taking on host Albion College for the team's first out-of-state road test.

Thanks to a career night from first-year Nicholas Graves, the Owls picked up their third win of the young season, smashing the Brits 82-64 to advance to the winner's round of the tournament.

Kenyon (3-1) was able to secure a lead through the first few minutes of action thanks to some excellent shooting from the floor and beyond the arc, gaining a 15-11 advantage. The Owls started the game six of seven from the floor and three of four from three, as Langston Foster drilled two triples to lead the team early on. At the midway point of the first, the visitors held a 25-22 lead, with seven different players finding the stat sheet for the Owls.

After adding five points to his sheet in the first part of the opening half, Graves took over down the stretch of the first 20 minutes, adding 11 points. He poured in two threes and added a layup late in the half to put his team up 44-38 at the break, already dropping 16 points.

In the second half, Kenyon began to pull away, ripping off a 25-15 run to start the period. Jackson Burke brought in nine points, while Nick Nelson added six and Graves chipped in five. At the 10 minute mark in the second, the Owls were up 69-53 and never looked back.

Albion kept up down the stretch, but it wasn't enough to match the Kenyon attack, as Graves added two more threes and Foster added five points. In the end, the Owls cruised to an 82-64 victory.

As a team, Kenyon shot 55.2 percent (32-of-58) from the floor and 57.7 percent (15-of-26) from three. Graves led the way with a career high 27 points, also setting best marks in field goals made (9) and three pointers made (6) going a perfect 100 percent form deep. Foster was next up, scoring 17 points on 50 percent shooting from the floor and from three. Burke led the team with nine boards, while Nelson and Graves each had five assists.

The Owls will take on No. 16 Illinois Wesleyan tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. for the winner's round of the Mike Turner College Classic from Albion, Michigan.
