Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Kenyon comes up short to Illinois Wesleyan

ALBION, Mich. – After picking up a victory last night to advance to the winner's round of the Mike Turner College Classic, the Kenyon College men's basketball team faced off against No. 16 Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon.

The Titans took an early lead and never let up, and despite another good performance from the underclassmen, the Owls were unable to keep up in the end, falling 59-89.

Jackson Burke led the Owls in the first half, pouring in nine points in the first 20 minutes. The sophomore shot four-of-six (66.7 percent) from the floor and added a triple. Kenyon (3-2) held tough through the first couple minutes of play, but Illinois Wesleyan built up a 24-9 lead after 10 minutes thanks to a 17-7 run.

Seven of Burke's nine points came in the latter portion of the half, as the Owls clawed back to close the first. He splashed a three at 4:50 in the first, and came back with a dunk and a layup to cap off a solo run. Langston Foster chipped in seven points in the half, followed by Ashton Bjerke and Nick Nelson with three apiece, as Kenyon trailed 27-45 at the break.

After halftime, the No. 16 Titans showed their teeth, opening up the team's biggest lead of the game. Illinois Wesleyan jumped out to a 19-9 run to start the second half, and led 64-36 at the 10 minute mark. Burke continued his strong game with another triple, while Marius Mazeika, Nick Valentino and Nicholas Graves all found the net.

The latter part of the second belonged to Valentino and Bjerke who had eleven and nine points respectively. Bjerke's bundle of points came from a trio of triples in the final six minutes of play, while Valentino added two threes of his own to go along with a layup and three free throws.

In the end, however, it was too much for the Owls to handle, as the Titans took home the winner in the end. As a team, Kenyon shot 32.4 percent from the field and 32.3 percent from three. The Owls held an offensive rebounding edge 12-10, and forced 12 turnovers.

Bjerke's 12 points are a new career high for the first year, and led the team. Valentino added a season high 11 points, while Burke and Foster each found double figures with 10 apiece. Mazieka led the team on the glass, bringing in six boards, and Will McDonald headed up the assists and steals, adding four each.

Kenyon's record moves to 3-2 on the season. The Owls will head back to Gambier for a home game on Tuesday, November 25 at 7 p.m., where the team will take on Bluffton University.
