Owls overpower opponents, take Invitational title

GAMBIER, Ohio — The Kenyon College men's swimming and diving team capped off a dominant weekend at the Steen Aquatic Center, sweeping all three days of the Total Performance Invitational and securing the team title with a commanding 1,855 points. Carnegie Mellon University finished second with 1,506.5, followed by West Chester University in third with 1,291. Case Western Reserve University (1,120.5), Hope College (861), SUNY Geneseo (808.5), and Lindsey Wilson University (597) rounded out the field.

After two days of electrifying swims, senior Djordje Dragojlovic somehow found another gear. The Serbian standout delivered a historic performance in the 100-yard freestyle, winning the event in 43.13, a new personal-best and the fastest time in Kenyon history. His mark breaks the previous program record of 43.14, which he set a season ago.

Dragojlovic's time also cleared the NCAA Division III "A" cut (43.15) by two hundredths of a second, making him the first DIII swimmer this season to hit the automatic qualifying standard and officially giving him the fastest 100-yard freestyle time in the nation.

Kenyon's momentum continued with impressive swims across the board. In the 200-yard backstroke, senior Ethan Manske notched a first place finish with a time of 1:48.70, earning him an NCAA "B" cut and the fourth-best time in DIII this season. First-year Kristof Szappanos followed right behind with a 1:49.07 finish.

Teo Jaworski took third in the 100-yard freestyle with a strong 44.85, earning an NCAA "B" cut and a new personal-best. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Noel Tumbasz narrowly missed gold, finishing second with a time of 2:00.53, which comfortably earned a "B" cut by dipping under the 2:00.92 standard. Roman Savage added another podium finish for the Owls, placing third in the 200-yard butterfly with a 1:47.98, a mark that came in nearly two seconds under the NCAA "B" cut.

The Owls closed the meet in signature fashion, winning the 400-yard freestyle relay as Dragojlovic, Jaworski, Spencer Stluka, and Pedro Mello Araujo combined for a blazing 2:57.63, the second-fastest time in Division III this season.

Kenyon's distance swimmers added crucial depth to secure the team title. In the 1650-yard freestyle, first-year Matthew Amodio led the Owls with a fifth-place finish in 15:49.88, followed closely by teammates Gabriel Cowart (7th, 15:57.98), Conner Verbanas (8th, 15:59.00), and Evan Harrison (9th, 16:04.27). Junior Matthew Weiner rounded out Kenyon's scoring group in 11th place with a time of 16:10.78.
