Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Owls outlast Bison in wild season opener

GAMBIER, Ohio -- In a game with plenty of twists and turns, the Kenyon College men's basketball team steadied itself down the stretch, sank two clutch free throws, and got a last-second defensive stop to post a 67-66 win over the Bethany College Bison on Saturday afternoon at Tomsich Arena.

Bethany got the first bucket of the game and then did not score again for the next nine minutes of play. That allowed Kenyon to get its offense in gear and to move ahead 18-2. The last seven of those points in the 18-0 run were recorded by sophomore Marius Mazeika.

After that, the Bison decided to turn things into a track meet, racing up and down the floor until they pulled within two points of the Owls, at 20-18. Kenyon, however, recovered with four points from first-year Bence Lendvay and a three-ball from his classmate Jack Corrigan Conaty. That surge got the Owls into the break with a 27-22 lead.

The Bison stampede continued into the second half and they coupled their fast-paced play with accurate long-range shooting. Bethany's Jaden Stewart and Ryan Reasbeck went a combined 7-for-12 (58.3 percent) from three-point range, which eventually put the Bison ahead 58-56 with just under three minutes remaining in the game.

Meanwhile, Kenyon struggled all game long from beyond the arc, going 4-for-28 (14.3 percent) as a team. The Owls, instead, held their ground by outsourcing Bethany in the paint, 44-30.

With just 50 seconds left in the game, a three-pointer from Reasbeck gave Bethany a 64-62 lead. A Kenyon miss on the other end of the court was followed up by two more points from Reasbeck, who helped the Bison tally 21 fast-break points throughout the game.

Senior Nick Nelson then made one of two free throws for the Owls and, during Bethany's attempt to inbound, Lendvay muscled the ball away from Reasbeck and dished to Jackson Burke, who converted the easy layup, making the score 66-65 in favor of Bethany.

Kenyon went into foul mode until they put Jayden Jackson on the line. Jackson missed the front end of a one-and-one and Burke grabbed the rebound. After a timeout, Kenyon ran a play for Lendvay, who broke loose on the left side, but was fouled. With nine seconds remaining, Lendvay sank both free throws to put Kenyon up by one.

Bethany then burned a timeout. When they returned to the floor with the ball, Troy Hixson took a tough desperation shot that was swatted out of bounds by Burke. With just under two seconds left, the Bison had one more shot, but their inbound pass was stolen by Lendvay.

In his first collegiate game, Lendvay led Kenyon with 15 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds and had two steals. Burke finished with eight points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Langston Foster, another first-year, chipped in with 13 points.

Stewart, who sank four three-pointers, led Bethany with 17 points and Reasbeck finished with 16.
