Owls wrap up regular season with Fast Chance

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Like it has done for years now, the Kenyon College men's swimming and diving team closed out its regular-season schedule at home with the Fast Chance Invitational, a series of scheduled events and time trials for swimmers around the region to sharpen up times before NCAA Championship qualifiers are announced.

The meet, which took place Saturday and followed the Owls' Friday-night First Chance Invitational, saw some Kenyon swimmers trim down times, but none were able to register an NCAA 'B' cut.

Early in the meet, Kenyon's most notable time came from first-year Leo Karnitz. He completed the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 49.59. That turned out to be a personal-best, topping his previous mark of 50.12, set earlier this season. Toward the end of the meet, Karnitz rang up another personal-best in the 100-yard freestyle. He went into the meet with a best of 47.69 and came out of the meet with a new best of 47.17.

In that same 100-yard freestyle race, sophomore Pedro Mello also established a personal-best, flipping a 46.74 for a 46.25. Roman Savage also added a personal-best of 46.31.

The 100-yard backstroke witnessed sophomore Matthew Weiner put up a personal-best time of 52.30 and first-year Sajan Ramachandran ring up a season-best of 53.36. Later, senior Andre McCloud, who swam the 50-yard freestyle Friday night in 21.03, stopped the clock Saturday at 21.05.

Charlie Green, a first-year backstroke specialist, gave the 1650-yard freestyle a shot Saturday and fared well with a personal-best 15:57.67, a little more than six seconds away from the NCAA 'B' cut.

Qualifying Owl swimmers will now turn their attention to the NCAA Championship, which will start on March 19 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Owl divers will next compete in the NCAA Regional Championship at Denison University on February 28.
